List of demands by “Students of Hamilton College”

They misuse big words: “almost ubiquitously”…they need to read Strunk and White.

“We demand” Has become de riguere among college protestors as of late. Usually demands are made by people who have some sway over others. Unions make demands because they can choose to strike, kidnappers, terrorists etc make demands because of damage they can cause. The power these protestors have is only in proportion to the power the administrations choose give them. I think I would be saying that we won’t discuss demands but we will discuss challenges and proposals to deal with them. At best these students are kind of saying if I don’t get what I want I’ll hold my breath.

I’m amazed that these bright kids actively choose to find their way to schools whose geography, student body and leadership demographics can be easily ascertained well ahead of application or matriculation and then claim that they are made to feel too vulnerable, threatened and afraid for their lives by the very conditions that were knowable ahead of their arrival. Hamilton is certainly a fine school, but does anyone go there thinking that having Hamilton on their diploma will vault them into a previously unknown but desired level of status that makes the social discomfort worth it?

What does “intersectionality” mean in this (or any) context?

I myself demand calorie-free hot chocolate flowing from all water fountains on campus. And a really hot guy carrying my books.

@Pizzagirl, I have to call you out on your hetrosexism in mentioning that the really hot person carrying your books has to be male, not to mention that fact that the bound volumes must be freed.

it’s my safe space - to only date males. How dare you invade my safe space!!

Watch it, music, since that statement is bordering on a microagression against those with bad taste.

Perhaps they were referring to this offensive wallpaper. I think the pattern only comes in White.

I’m pretty sure it’s this

This does not seem much different than student outrage that has been periodically expressed on other campuses at other time periods. The main difference I see is the obfuscating language. They’d get a lot more buy in if they used simple terminology that didn’t lend itself to ridicule.

Too bad the demanders don’t subscribe to The Economist

This is a small, private college in a rural area of NY. Everyone has choices, and these students chose to go to Hamilton. There are other schools that would meet every one of their needs.

Is the group anonymous? If so, then how does anyone know that it is not just a tiny fringe group with little support (even among those whom it is claiming to act on behalf of), or even a false flag made to discredit attempts to address legitimate grievances by going over the top with unrealistic demands?

Kids at Amherst and brown also present a list of “demands” this semester, following the protests at Yale.

presented can’t seem to edit on my phone anymore. Hit the edit symbol but get “copy/ paste” instead.

@gmtplus7 I dont really think you are in a position to criticize black students in the US. You dont live in this country and your kids go to $60,000 per year private boarding high schools. What experience do you personally have with black and hispanic minorities?

Holy sesquipedalian loquaciousness.

I criticize a lot of things with which I have no personal experience. I am anti foot binding and anti rain forest clearing, just to give two examples.
