List of demands by “Students of Hamilton College”

You know darn well it’s just a dozen or so, and everyone else just wishes they’d shut up and get back to the business of schoolwork and campus life.

@tiger1307 It’s called an opinion. Yes he is allowed to have one…no experience necessary. Nothing in US law or even in the CC rules that say he has to live in this country or be of a certain SES to have an opinion on a subject. Being successful and of a different backround he just might bring a different perspective to the conversation. It is that type of talk which really annoys many about the protestors.

@tiger1307, why are you assuming that the poster is criticizing black students? The members of The Movement are anonymous. It seems like you are making assumptions about the race of those who issued the demands.

In my opinion, Hamilton already lowered their standards enough if those who wrote those demands were admitted. How do you not proofread a document you plan to send to the administration of your college, and if you did and this is the product, then that’s just as bad or worse. And the mindless insertion of SJW words is annoying.

Hamilton is in the middle of nowhere, and skiing is a favorite student pastime there, if I not mistaken. For how many urban kids would the place even be a good fit?

tiger, we are middle class and my Hispanic kids attend a public school with a representative black population. Can I have an opinion?

As an aside, my son was recently asked in a job interview how it is that he’s Hispanic but isn’t fluent in Spanish. What, now minorities are no longer expected to assimilate? All these manifestos achieve is widen the gap between “us” and “them.”

The more I think about both the substance of the demands (racist wallpaper), the amount of grammatical and syntax errors in them, and the fact that the students who wrote them are not identifying themselves, the more I wonder if they were perhaps issued by a very conservative group on campus to discredit another group of activists.

I don’t know anything about Hamilton College – does it have a tradition of conservatism similar to what Dartmouth does?

I’m not accusing anyone of anything, just wondering if this is a new twist on what’s become a common narrative on private college campuses [campi?].

Maybe “wallpaper” was a typo overlooked by spell-checker??

:))

You lost me at bright kids…

One of the complaints made is that most of the minorities at Hamilton are there through opportunity programs (I have no idea how true this is). Maybe they felt misled by these programs.

An anonymous group of kids set up a Facebook page. No building occupation, no public assembly of any kind. Not so much as even a group photo. I don’t see a censorship issue here.

Why any organization has to accommodate the demands of the openly racist group?
And how about other students who do not belong to this openly racist group?

I have two kids in US colleges. I live in the US. I pay taxes in the US. I vote in the US. Everyone can have opinions regarding US educational policy including Hamilton college. The head of ISIS can express an opinion. It is a question as to how much weight we give to those opinions regarding under represented minorities from people with minimal contact with the US

I must have missed how they are openly racist. Is that because they are advocating for the rights of people of color?

"I must have missed how they are openly racist. Is that because they are advocating for the rights of people of color? "
By demanding the special privileges to certain groups and not privileges based strictly on the “most eligible” factors.

“We, the Students of Hamilton College, demand an increase in the number of professional development workshops targeted at Students of Color, LGBT+, and other marginalized groups” - participants should be selected strictly on the level of their ability to participate and not on any other factors like Skin Color.
This one is even much obviously racial statement.
“We, the Students of Hamilton College, demand that white faculty are discouraged from leading departments about demographics and societies colonized, massacred, and enslaved.”
Just imagine if any of the demands asked for the special treatment of the whites or Asians. Would not it create an uproar? Why the demands of special treatment of other groups (and God forbid, there is demand for special advantages given to Asians, that will never eve happen, somehow they are “privileged” already) is not racial? Should not it work both ways?
Nobody calls NFL or NBA racist organization, and I completely agree that they are NOT - players are simply chosen by their ability and absolutely nothing else. And that is how it suppose to work.
Student who do not agree with the policies of certain college, should never have applied to this college. There are many choices in this country. And if nobody applied somewhere, then this college would cease to exists. Just apply where you feel that you belong instead of changing the whole organization that may fit somebody else, but seems not to fit you. It is like buying the car and them demand from the manufacturer that they completely revamp the car based on your likings. The question is, why not to buy the one that you personally like in the first place?

“It is a question as to how much weight we give to those opinions regarding under represented minorities from people with minimal contact with the US”

What are you talking about? GMTplus7 is an American citizen, as is her husband, as are their children. They grew up here. They happen to be living as expats right now. Their sons go to school (high school, college) in America and they’re planning on moving back here once their expat assignment is through.

Miami what you are doing is essentially advocating the separate but equal concept. "If you dont like it dont go there"I think that is fundamentally wrong and your concepts of racism are essentially backwards.

If you want to rail against racism how about the nut case racist who runs liberty university and wants to “end those muslims before they walk in”

Personally, I think a lot of this boils down to narcissism. I feel some of these kids think this is all a big game, and that it’s “cool” to be part of a progressive movement. Re: immaturity…

For the record, I am all for equal rights, but you can’t just storm in demanding your terms like a group of thugs. First, figure out if there really is a problem. If there is, then take the issue quietly up the chain of command of the school to address it. Instead, these kids are busting out the heavy weapons right away, and it comes across as very tacky.

Here you go:

How about: we ask that the best qualified individual, who will equally respect and support all members of the Hamilton community, be selected as the next president of Hamilton College. Hey, guess what? That’s already on the agenda!

I must have missed how a Facebook page is the equivalent of “storming in”.

Do these students know they are actively supporting anti-gay groups?!

http://www.vocativ.com/culture/lgbt/two-largest-native-american-tribes-in-u-s-ban-gay-marriage/

Yes, that’s right. The Navajo and the Cherokee ban gay marriage. Maybe they want to change their manifesto of demands to state that no Native Peoples may not come to their college until they drop tribal affiliation.

Funny…actually…
