List of Good books for HS and pre-college summer

Everyone can contribute, and I thought I'd be productive if ppl each made a list of their top 5 books (not favorite, but the best book).

Here's Mine(not listed according to my ranking):
1. The Sane Society - Erich Fromm
2. 1984 - G. Orwell
3. Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
4. The Psychology of Persuasion - Robert Cialdini
5. Revolutionary Wealth - Alvin Toffler

(Yeah, a bit lopsided to distopian books)

I'd say that good places to start would be current best-sellers and this list, though it focuses on classics:
great books - book search, top 100 books

Haha, way too many to list, but here's some good books:
Special Topics in Calamity Physics -Marisha Pessl
Liars' Club-Mary Karr
The Castle-Kafka
Veronika Decides To Die-Paulo Coehlo
Focault's Pendulum-Umberto Eco
Angels and Demons-Dan Brown (better than Da Vinci Code!!)
Running With Scissors-Augustin Borroughs
The Handmaid's Tale-Margaret Atwood

I'm reading BNW right now...dislike it though!

^
How come! Well, I admit that the literature isnt exactly top class, but he delivers his message in an extremely effective way. Even better than 1984.

I guess. I mean, I get it but like comparing it with modernity and Marxism theories just blows me off!!!!!!!!!!!

i havent read BNW, but i thought 1984 superior to most other high school level curriculum reads

^^^^how? most people read it in like eigth or ninth grade

Godel, Escher, Bach - an eternal golden braid

Great Gatsby! But I heard colleges hate it when it is mentioned in apps, so dont!

Other nice reads are Catch-22 (my personal favorite) and Jurassic Park (much better and scientific than the movie)

^
I agree with Jurassic Park, but I disliked the Great Gatsby. I mean, I get the message, but felt that it was kinda superflous

I really want to say Dune, because it's enjoyable, and deep too.

Hmm, hard because I like classics...
Dracula
Scarlet Letter
Rebecca
Sense and Sensibility
Great Gatsby

about Gatsby, I really REALLY hated it when I first read it. Then I reread it and realized how good it was. (I really hate rereading books too-I usually dislike them, but it really improved after the second reading)

as for a non-classic book you MUST read, FIGHT CLUB. Absolutely amazing. The movie is great, but the book is great too.

I loveddd the Great Gatsby, def one of my fav books.
I didn't appreciate it at all until we went over it with my English teacher---but the way everyhting comes together and every little thing has such significance is amazing.

why do colleges hate when it's mentioned!? =(

I want to read Running with Scissors, Love in the time of Cholera, Atonement, and The Other Boleyn Girl<<<<all before I see the movies, haha.

I hated the Scarlet Letter.
with a passion.

ummmm. I like Madame Bovary and The English Patient<<beautiful language

I like Lisa See (Snowflower and the Secret Fan; Peony in Love)

^ Other Boleyn Girl is SO great. Philippa Gregory = my life. I read about 6 of her books (the whole Tudor series and a few others) in a few weeks, and then realized I needed to space out her books better! I have one on my nightstand right now actually.

The Destiny's Children trilogy - Stephen Baxter

It's absolutely mindbending.

Anything K.Vonnegut is absolute gold
and also..
Atlas Shrugged
The Fountainhead
A Clockwork Orange
Ender's Game
Midnight's Children
Heart of Darkness
The Stranger
Catch 22

Newer/just for fun-
Absurdistan
The Road
Next
Lullaby
Choke
Middlesex
The Almost Moon

where do you guys find the time to read?? I mean with all those AP's, ec's, etc how can you find time to read a book like Atlas Shrugged??

Any book by Robert Cormier is good. I am the Cheese, The Chocolate War

I read in... I think it was the "Princeton Review book of College Essays that made it" and some of the schools expressed their dislike for the Great Gatsby. I think it is bc everyone uses it or something...
