Can we get a list going of such schools?
This is all I know:
Missouri State offers “some” tuition wavers for OOS students (GPA has to be at least 3.0)
Texas State
Coastal Carolina
Montclair
Florida State offers in-state tuition on an academic merit basis.
Students at Utah and Western Michigan can gain residency (and thereby pay in-state tuition) after their Freshman year if they attend summer school or otherwise stay over the summer and meet some other requirements.
schools in the academic common market offer instate tuition to participating states for BFA in MT. Check their website and plug in your state etc to see if your state participates.
also if you check the college’s website they will tell you if their neighboring states are eligible for in state tuition or tuition discounts.
Plus as someone said , some schools offer in state tuition for certain GPA etc. I know Indiana Univ of PA does this.
I know Montclair’s offer is only for MTs. Does anyone know if the others mentioned are only for MTs, or also for Acting majors as well?
I only know of Coastal Carolina having the academic common market discount, not an offering of in state tuition to BFA majors.
We are OOS for Coastal Carolina and are getting no tuition break/in-state tuition.
Coastal Carolina gives the in state tuition only to academic common market participant states . We live in MD where there is no BFA in MT offered by any school (!) so we get in state tuition from Coastal & also WVU because of this.
Montclair I cannot recall if its any BFA or just MT @Notmath1 . Love your name by the way lol
Most of the other schools that offer in state tuition to neighbor states offer it to any major. You really have to search for this info on the tuition sections of their website as it is sometimes in fine print…
Montclair’s offer is for BFA MT’s AND BFA Acting, as well as music majors. Not sure if it is for other BFA’s as well (Dance, Production and Design) but I think so!
Actually, Florida State University waives half of the OOS tuition based upon artistic merit (being admitted to the BFA or BM program ) A student with strong academic qualifications can qualify for a full waiver. Additional OOS funding is available on a year-to-year basis.
Thanks for the info about Coastal Carolina. Good to know.
Western Michigan I believe… and Michigan State maybe
Texas State’s in state tuition offer applies to BFA MT and Acting majors.
Thanks @MTDadandProud , @Calliene and @theaterwork . Very helpful!
The Coastal Carolina department of theatre recommends BFA majors for the Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship. It is $2,500 per year for in-state and $6,500 per year for out-of-state students. The difference between in-state tuition and OOS tuition is currently $6,895 per year. So an OOS VPA scholarship closes the tuition difference between in-state and OOS pretty well. It is considered a merit award at CCU, so students should meet the 1000 SAT or 21 ACT and high school GPA of 3.0 requirements.
Good to know this @austinmtmom ! Thanks for the info
@austinmtmom, I believe the difference in in-state and out-of-state tuition for Coastal is about $14,000/year, so unfortunately there’s still @ a $7500 gap.
Not just for BFA students, but the University of Alabama - Birmingham has very nice GPA/SAT/ACT score based scholarships for out-of-state students that knock off $7500-$15k annually. That was one of the things that made UAB move way up on my D’s list, as she qualified for their 2nd largest scholarship.
Not for all out-of-state students, but University of Central Oklahoma has their Broncho Advantage program that provides partial out-of-state tuition waivers for residents of Arkansas, Kansas, and Texas. They also seem to offer artistic scholarships to incoming MT students (their program is a BM that is structured much like a BFA).
@exitstageleft You’re right. I was calculating per semester rather than per year. My apologies.
Montclair State offers in state tuition for BFA Musical Theater, Acting, Music, and Dance. I believe they also offer it for other BFA Theater programs (Directing, Design, etc) as well. And possibly for Film Production…but I’m not positive on that one.
