List the top 10 schools in each state!

I agree with post #13 about texas schools. Thats exactly how i would have ranked them.

Washington State:

University of Washington

Gonzaga University

Whitman College

Washington State University

thats about it for selective colleges.

Cornish College in Seattle for art maybe?
Dale Chihuly's studio in Tacoma is probably also one of the top 5 places in the world to learn glassblowing. lol.

Are people from FL retarded? I have seen Rollins on only one list, and UCF is way too high on most people's lists (haven't you ever heard it nicknamed "You Can't Fail" or "Under Construction Forever?") Here is a better list:

1) UF
2) NCF
3) UM
4) Rollins
5) FSU

And maybe New College has a really good program, but it is way too young to be ranked ahead of UF right now. Hence the name "New" College. It could be in the future though!

fsu below rollins, um, ncf?

Washington D.C.:

Georgetown

GW

Howard

Catholic

American (tie)

Trinity (tie)

Gallaudet

^ On what plane of thinking?

Try...

G-town

GW

American

Catholic

Howard

Trinity

Gallaudet

Duffman28, I can't quibble w/ your choices too much, although I do think you have American rated too high (it would be below Howard in my book -- your comparing a run-of-the mill U w/ the most famous black U; so well known that a number of whites attend, too). Also, I think you also underestimate Trinity Coll. It doesn't get a lot of pub, but it's kind of like D.C.'s own 7-sisters college; on par, in my book, w/ Agnes Scott outside Atlanta -- it has a number of wealthy, famous alumnae, including House Minority Leader, Nancy Pelosi.

No way Gonzaga's better than Whitman.

I guess I will do indiana since no one else will... also this list takes into account overall environment, setting, and fun as well as academics.

Notre Dame

DePauw/Indiana University

Purdue/Butler

Rose-Hulman(argue if u want)

Wabash

IUPUI

Indiana State

Princeton

TCNJ

Rutgers

Stevens

Ramapo

NJIT

Rowan

Montclair

Drew

Seton Hall

G-town: SAT Reasoning
Verbal: 640 - 750
SAT Reasoning Math: 650 - 740

GW: SAT Reasoning Verbal: 600 - 700
SAT Reasoning Math: 600 - 690

American U.: SAT Reasoning Verbal: 600 - 690
SAT Reasoning Math: 580 - 670

Catholic: SAT Reasoning Verbal: 530 - 630
SAT Reasoning Math: 510 - 620

Howard: SAT Reasoning Verbal: 460 - 680
SAT Reasoning Math: 450 - 690

^ I would say those are pretty mysterious gaps...

Trinity: SAT Reasoning Verbal: 360 - 480
SAT Reasoning Math: 330 - 480

^ Don't think I even need to say anything, this is clearly a lesser institution academically, it's just to big of a gap to be justified.

Basically, my point is, American is #85 in the nation, Howard is #93, therefore, you can argue that they are equal, but not better, especially due to Howard's very low overall SAT's, despite a solid top 25% or so.

Trinity, is in no way anywhere near American academically or in any other way, they are not even ranked (third-tier for Master's, unranked entirely for undergrad) and their SAT scores show a school that is clearly not in the same league as American.

Sorry, any objective evaluation will say that Indiana University-Bloomington is one of the best public universities in the nation, and therefore, it's the best in the state.

And, incidentally, Gonzaga is superior to Washington State University ONLY in basketball. WSU and U of Washington clearly have the greatest academic assets in the state. UW and WSU are not far apart in that regard either. Whitman College, as an LAC has some strengths in undergraduate education over the two main public universities. After that, all others, while not "inferior," are far down the line in what they can offer an undergraduate.

LakeWashington, that's terrible logic. By that mode of thinking, UIUC beats out Northwestern and UChicago. Not so.

"Sorry, any objective evaluation will say that Indiana University-Bloomington is one of the best public universities in the nation, and therefore, it's the best in the state."

umm.. it is listed as the best PUBLIC in the state. But how can it compete with notre dame??

Drummerdude, by what thinking did you pull that argument out of your hat? That's no rabbit, that's for sure. LOL.

I described UW and WSU quality as colleges overall and their quality is quite good by any objective standard. Don't extend a discussion into an example that properly doesn't fit it.

Myheart, do you have any familiarity with the academic offerings at Indiana University? IU has been strong and excellent for a long time.

"Myheart, do you have any familiarity with the academic offerings at Indiana University? IU has been strong and excellent for a long time."

umm.. yeah, I lived in indiana for the past 10 years and i will be going to college in indiana(Depauw). So I am very aware of what IU has to offer, I have been going there since middle school for various programs and things. I am also very well aware that IU has plenty of top programs, students, and professors. But the fact is that top to bottom Notre Dame is a "better" school. I personally would never attend notre dame because i absolutely hate the place and how conservative it is, but that doesnt change the fact that notre dame is a top school while IU is a good state school. How could i possibly justify putting IU ahead of notre dame when a kid with a 2.8 can get into IU and kids with 3.8 have a tough time getting into notre dame. Selectivity, prestige and rankings dont count for everything but they do count for something.

Here is USNWR data on Virginia schools under debate -- UVa, U Richmond, Va Tech, William & Mary, Washington and Lee. These rebut the view that Virginia Tech deserves to be listed above W&L. And they support W&L's claim to a #1 or 2 spot. Whatever your opinion may be, these are relevant facts:

UVA V35.6%, M40.9%
VT V5%, M11%
UR V24.3%, M28.4%
W&M V42.0%, M32.0%
W&L V43%, M48%
--W&L has the highest percentage of students with math and verbal SAT I scores above 700; VT has the lowest (a differential of at least 35 percentage points).

Yes, these are all fine schools that have served their students and alumni long and well. Each has strengths that are worthy of recognition. But let's inform ourselves with facts in lieu of trading provocative or ill-informed generalizations.

Problem is no one has heard of washinton and lee, haven't you read the facebook group "It's ok if you haven't heard of washington and Lee... you probably couldn't get in."
