I've participated in the orchestra pit for two shows at my school, and a concert at the Kennedy center. Is it alright for me to list these experiences as separate activities in the activites section of the common app?

For example

Activity: My School's production of _______
Hours per week: 3
Weeks spent: 11

I would appreciate any comments. Also, I was the music director for a charity concert in 10th grade (transcribed all the sheet music that the band used, lead practice sessions, etc.). I spent around 6 months preparing for the concert that we performed, so could I write that as a separate activity?

Deadlines are closing in, so I could really use some help. Thanks.

It depends on your whole resume - since you have 10 rows for Activities (plus the Additional Information section if needed), if those are the activities you want to highlight, then it is okay to separate them. But if you also have several other significant activities that might show a bigger picture of who you are, then you can “bundle” similar activities in one category.

For example, my S has done a ton of theater, so he just listed this as one activity, so he would have room to list his other activities. However, he also had both vocal and instrumental music, and these were separated out (not lumped together as “music”).

I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way to do it - just try to use the constraints of the Common App format to highlight yourself and your passions and accomplishments so the Admissions Office has a clear idea of who you are.
