Lit

How are yall so good at Lit....any tips to make this bad-scoring-CR person achieve a good score on the upcoming SAT II test date?

The Lit. test is kind of challenging for me, even though I score well on the CR section the SAT. The only thing that I can recommend (which I am also doing) is to get the Kaplan's SAT II Lit book, and read all the poetry, and try to interpret them without looking at the questions.

I have Barron's....bad?

I'm not really sure about Barrons, but I heard that Kaplans is more accurate when it comes to the questions and the poetry selections for the Lit. Test. Also, most of Barrons prep book are notoriously harder than the real thing, but I guess overpreparing can't hurt too much.

What are your CR secrets? ;-)

I skim the reading passage, and make notes to the side over every paragraph, so that I can find it easier, when I go back (saves time). I make sure tthat I answer the questions, based on evidence in the passages, even if there is a better answer out there that could work. Unless the question asks you to to infer or make an assumption, then don't pick answers that sound good.

How do you have enough time though....what kinds of things do you write?

I have enough time, because I skim it and write the notes out, so that I have a general idea of the area that I'm looking for. I can go back and specifically find the answer the question. I write notes about the tone, the mood, what the paragraph is about, and etc.

I usually skim...but I get a bad score.

But do you go back and read in depth to find the answer?

No because I feel like I won't have enough time

go on collegeboard.com and look up the lit section, and try out the sample questions, and tell me what exactly you do, and tell me how long it took you to finish...then I will give you some tips on how to improve your technique...

tomorrow....lol

it's late

lol...yeah, it is late...i was hoping you were going to say that, so that i can go to sleep.. :)

I'm retaking Lit next Week along with Bio....grrr. For me, I thought my CR skills had helped on Lit until I got my score back. I sank a total of 110 points from CR to Lit. - -; I used Barron's to prep for the first time (WAY too detailed), and now I'm using Kaplan's. Personally, I don't take notes or underlines or anything when I read. But I don't do that with CR either, so that could just be a personal preference. I also find that I DO need to go back to Lit passages and read them over more carefully. I did this on the November SAT II and found that I had very little time left over. It IS time consuming, but there will be certain passages that will just click automatically in your mind and others that merit further analysis.
