Livescribe Pulse Smart Pen

Does anyone here use the Smart Pen? If so, would love to hear if you recommend it.

We're thinking of buying one for S to use this spring in HS, so he can get used to it and then take it with him for freshman yr. of college in Fall.

I am thinking of buying one as well. It is not readily available in Canada so I haven’t yet.

If you google Livescribe Smart Pen ratings you can find some reviews on them. Most are positive, a few are negative.

One negative is that you can only transcribe into PDF files. I personally would want to be able to manipulate and index my files in some kind of Excel or Word files.

Livescribe provide some online storage for their files, but it is very small.

Some people also do not like that you need to buy the notebooks from them for the technology to optimize the benefits. I don’t particular mind, and you can buy software front them to print out your own special paper to work with the pen.

I hope to give a better review when and if I bought the pen.

There is also a facebook group, you may be able to get a feel how the support/customer service is from that site.

I have the Pulse Smartpen 4GB. It is AWESOME. The spiral bound notebooks are very heavy-duty, and there are 8 different numbers/colors. You can use up to 8 at a time, but need to archive to use a new one of the same number. For classes, the beauty is in the audio recording synchronization to your notes. The pen remembers what was said the exact moment you wrote something, so any notebook, any page, all semester — just tap and it starts playing the lecture from that point. If you know you really need to know something just the way your prof said it - find it in your notebook and tap. Fill in with more notes while it’s playing and they will be linked to that point in that lecture too.
For me, it’s less about that you can upload everything to your computer, which you can, and you can click on your notes and the lecture will start there. It’s really more about being able to go back and fill in the blanks. If I know I missed something I definitely wanted to get written down, I just draw a blank and then go back later an tap on the blank…and fill it in!
I don’t know what I did before the smartpen…but it wasn’t neat and complete notes, that’s for sure!
It almost isn’t fair …
