I have been living in a noisy dorm, which has been an unpleasant experience. Commuting to Cal campus from home is one hour drive daily. Shall I continue to live in a dorm or commute daily? Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Hour long commute is a pain. You’ll be cut off from campus, and lose 2+ hours a day going to/from campus. Not to mention having to deal with parking and stuff. And you’ll be stuck in libraries/cafes during long breaks between class. And it’ll be harder to make it to things like study groups and clubs. But it’s still doable if you really want to.

You could also look into getting an apartment or something, then you’re not stuck in dorms and don’t have to commute.

Are you a freshman? I am sure times have changed, but I cherish my memories of freshman year in the Cal dorms (and sophomore year, too ). I can’t imagine ever living like that again, but it seems a shame for college to be a commuter experience if you have another option. Can you get your studying done on campus so the noise at the dorms doesn’t bother you so much? earplugs? Hopefully, you have friends there that are making being in the dorm at least somewhat fun for you?

I’d honestly pick the hour long commute over the noisy dorm. I personally have three friends whose commutes are about one hour by BART and they’re doing fine/living very comfortably. I think this is a lot more preferable than living with a bunch of noisy people because you’d most likely lose more than two hours of your day (less sleep and less study time with noisy people). Also, quality over quantity with study time–even if you’re able to study more in the dorms you’ll probably be distracted.

Of course, the better option would be to just get an apartment.
