Living Off Campus as a Freshman?

Hi, for a little background about my situation: I’m 19, living in Virginia, I graduated high school in 2014 and have been taking a couple of gap years to determine what I want to study at college. So far I’d like to study nutrition, but I have other interests as well that I’ll have to think about, (I’d like to start next fall ideally.) It seems that UVM is a good match for me, the location, like-minded people, classes, clubs, etc… but there are some things that I’m unsure about. One of those things seems like a minor issue but it’s more than that for me, and it’s the dorm requirement for freshman.

I have been living with my boyfriend of 2.5 years for quite some time now, we have a cat and our own place, and if I was to get in to UVM I would want to continue to live with them because it would make the most sense to me. I understand that many universities and colleges that require freshman to live in dorms are doing this to encourage students to participate in clubs and be a part of activities, to socialize and make friends, to get a feel for the school, etc. I want to take part in these things as well and make new friends, but my wanting to live off-campus/with him wouldn’t get in the way of my engaging in school events. A big reason why I would be more comfortable living in my own space is because I have anxiety and need a support system and to be around people that I am confident with.

What are the chances that I could live off-campus, or with him and my cat on campus throughout school?
(As a note, he wouldn’t be going to UVM as well – possibly the community college, though)
Thanks ahead of time for your advice/input.
