My son was accepted to NJIT with a substantial scholarship. We do not live near by, though, and he would need to live on campus. I notice that only 22% of the students live on campus. Will he feel out of place? Are the 78% of students commuting commuting from their parent’s home? Or do students live in nearby private housing in Newark?
Congratulations on the acceptance. The average student commutes. NJIT is a gem school for engineering and computer science but is not very well known nationally therefore those who live nearby and know it is a gem commute to it while those that live far that know of NJIT are typically the only ones that take up a dorm residence. With regard to campus activities I can’t answer fully as my son did not take their offer and chose a different school.
I do know that if your child got into the Albert Dorman school that he will be very comfortable. It is a new building and very comfortable. I know that the school offers some activities during the weekends but certainly he need not rely on these since there will be plenty of school work to get done as well as gym and swimming for daily exercise.
At my son’s college he had 5 hours/week of additional private work he had to accomplish for each of two separate courses (computer science and electrical/computer systems) which he would save up for the weekends to get done. It was a total of 10 hours of extra work which he would save up with his two lab partners for the weekends. They were very organized and aced their classes because of it. So if your son does something similar, he can be comfortably busy on his weekends.
My junior son may be applying to NJIT next year, hopefully he gets accepted with the same offer as my first son, if so I plan to encourage him to take the offer since their Computer Science program (his intended major) is ranked very high.
Good luck, NJIT is a great school.
Thank you so much for this useful information!
My nephew will be graduating this year from NJIT. Comp SCi and Math double major. Will be probably going to graduate school now.
I like this school.
With a little hard work and fewer superstars here, my nephew quickly rose to the top of his class and has a great GPA - lot of options for graduate school have opened up for him. HIs professors gave him a lot of research opportunities. He was able to get a lot of research done as part of UG and his resume looks great. I am sure if he went to a more competitive school, he would not have had the opportunity for research with other superstars to compete with.
A lot of people get put off by NJIT being in Newark. I think it is an opportunity for any kid to use this to ones own advantage and excel. At the end of the day, an employable degree is all that matters. Good GPA will help with Graduate school.
Good Luck.
Thanks for the information. Our sons sound similar. Did yours live in the dorm?
My nephew did not live on campus. He lived at home about 20 miles west of NJIT. It took about 25 - 45 minutes of driving (depending on the time of the day). However, he has friends who are in Honors college and they get to live in a very new and a nice dorm for Honors college students.
If you do not mind my asking, What was your sons SAT score? I am not sure if the enrollment in Honors college is automatic with NJIT application or a separate application is required. Honors college residence is free to Honors college enrollees with a good SAT and GPA.
Unfortunately, I didn’t know about the honors college when we applied. His SAT is 1420, but his gpa is only 3.0. I don’t know if he can get into the honors college now. Maybe we need to contact them.
