Is Stevens Institute of Technology (in NJ) a commuter school?

My son, a rising senior, is interested in undergrad computer science programs. I was wondering if anyone knew if the students at Stevens go home on the weekends or stay on campus. My son would definitely not enjoy going to a "suitcase" school. Any information on Stevens, in general, would be great!! Thanks for your help.

According to collegeboard…

"# 91% of first-year students live in college housing

85% of all undergraduates live in college housing"

That’s a pretty big amount IMO

Thanks for your reply. I agree, it is a large percentage. I guess my issue is do these kids go home on the weekends?

A neighbor kid of ours goes there. We are not from New Jersey.

Its a good school and they are working to get past their recent scandal with their former President living a lavish lifestyle.

You always have some kids who go to college, be that in Virginia, NC, Maryland, New Jersey, Michigan, New York…etc etc. who will go home on weekends if they live within 2 hours of home. But most often kids want to be independent, catch up on sleep, do laundry or study and hang with friends at school. And they often find that once they are beyond high school, the old gang isnt hanging around home either…and so there is less incentive to go home unless they are just insecure home bodies.

Your son will be fine. In the New York and New Jersey area there is so much to do with sports, entertainment, seeing the sights, heading to the shore etc that he will have lots to do. Stevens is unique because it has a core liberal arts requirement underneath their engineering programs. That makes them well rounded.

I know engineering is difficult everywhere, and Stevens is reputable, but is it right for the top students or is it more for B+ students?

I hire CS graduates and have done so for decades.
Stevens has an outstanding CS program (both undergrad and graduate).

i live around stevens and the campus is fantastic. it overlooks nyc, and there is path train to go to nyc - it takes about ten to fifteen minutes. washington street in hoboken is full of fantastic restaurants, record stores (tunes), music venues (maxwell’s).

stevens has a strong rep in the tri-state. a couple of my friends go there and love it. lopsided balance of males and females.

i haven’t heard of stevens as a commuter school, although i am sure some of the nj/ny kids will go home occasionally on the weekends. however, stevens is not isolated like many other schools, so there will always be something to do.

hope this helped.

I’ve visited a friend there and it seemed like, for the most part, students live on campus.
Hoboken is a great location and very close to NYC.

As others have said, some students will be going home, because from what I understand most of the students are from NY, NJ, CT, PA, etc., but that is the same everywhere.
