Has anyone tried this? I'm trying to see if I can go through college with taking notes completely on my computer, send homework through the internet, utilize e-books, etc. Of course I would use paper for classes that require paper, physical copies, etc.

so my questions are:
**has anyone tried this (literally 100% through the computer)
how can you do this with math courses?

and just stories in general. (good or bad) **

the reason why i want to do this is because i love the idea of having to lug my computer around instead of paper. and everything is organized to my customizing.

I have to use a computer for everything because I broke my left wrist and I’m left-handed.

It’s a little hard because I’m in a stats class and sometimes I don’t know how to type out formulas to put in my notes, etc, but with a little extra studying it’s not that hard. Other than that I have had very few problems, I simply type everything up and hand it in (my teachers won’t allow assignments to be emailed).

My school is not very laptop friendly, so I have to have physical copies of things. But because I’m not a fan of lugging a bunch of books around when unnecessary, I scan assignments and necessary pages into my computer (and evernote) so that I will have them at work and anywhere I might be when I get a spare moment to do them. This is particularly helpful for my math class because my book is insanely heavy, and my assignments are generally only on one to two pages. It’s not a paperless system as I do the assignments by hand and of course have the book for class, but it helps me keep things organized and it’s a lighter load on my shoulder when I’m not at school.

Math can be done with a tablet pc, but it’s not easy –> trust me. Also, I have found that e-books hinder my studying. I’d go pen and paper any day.

Keep in mind that whenever mathematicians have to turn in proposals to grant providers (like NSF), they have to submit copies written on a computer…Usually they’ll use MatLab or some similar program.

So, obviously it’s possible to write mathematical expressions on your computer…The question is whether you’re willing to learn the source code for Matlab, and whether you can write it efficiently.

^You’ve never heard of many things. Matlab is excellent at 3-D plotting, which is why mathematicians focusing on wave or signal imaging almost all use it. If you take a numerical analysis or fourier analysis course, you can be pretty certain your professor uses Matlab.

Comparing LaTeX to Matlab is like comparing HTML to C. LaTeX is a typesetting language. Matlab is a programming language. If you want to compute or plot something, use Matlab. If you want to type up a paper, use LaTeX. Easy as that.

I use the computer for everything, as someone with dysgraphia. But I don’t have the option to submit homework over the computer, it has to be printed and turned in or my profs won’t accept it.

Math was hard to do on the computer, but my dad threw together a program for me to use so it wasn’t a big deal.
