LMU vs. UCSB

I'm not trying to decide between these schools yet (since I'm a junior), but it would be great if you guys could comment on this comparison. And please don't use cost as a factor. And if you plan on using academics in your argument, I plan on majoring in business admin. with an emphasis in entertainment marketing at LMU. And either a bus/econ or communication major at UCSB.

Thanks...

You are not going to like LMU. You want to go to school with big sports, big social scene, warm weather, right?

LMU is not an exciting campus. I don't think you are going to like it. Most of the activity takes place off campus. They have rules there. You are So Cal so go on a campus tour and you will see what I mean.

With your grades and test scores....

U Miami is a reach...you're below average in grades and test scores. Do you bring something to the table the school wants?
UCSB the same as Miami.
ASU, you will get in.
SDSU you should get in if the grades you mentioned elsewhere are 10th grade and 11th grades. You also have to keep those grades up or you will be rescinded. SDSU goes on a strict point system.

USD is going to be tough. You might get in. Community service is important at that school.

You should apply to U of A. It has what you want except the town isn't the most exciting. I don't think you will care once you get there. The school has a great social scene and a great sports scene. The women are gorgeous.

dstark - I have visited LMU and I loved it. I think they have a pretty strong social scene. They have a pretty big frat scene, and the clubs in LA are amazing. And there is the beach. It is in the perfect location. And although their sports aren't huge, they have a pretty good rivalry with Pepperdine...it was really obvious. So I really like it. It is one of my top 3 choices.

I agree about LMU's location. If you have visited the school and love it, that's great.

Would you recommend U of A over ASU?

Because I think U of A may be the better option, but I think Tempe might be a better place to live, instead of Tucson. I don't know.

I would put it this way, you may like it better. My cousin went there. Had a fantastic time. Joined a frat. It's a more traditional campus. If I were you, I would definitely apply there. Worst case, you don't go and you are out the app fee. It's worth applying.

Thanks dstark.

But would anyone else like to comment on LMU vs. UCSB?

From reading dstarks posts and the emphasis in yours, UCSB, while a great location and a reputation for parties, is academically very competative. It is a UC and you may be out of your league (ie a big stretch). Students who go to UCSB tend to be high achievers who don't have quite the killer instinct needed to go to UCLA, Berkeley and UCSD. You would have to work pretty hard. It is attractive for its "laid back" environment and does have a party atmoshphere --if you are looking for that (It is also great for serious students).

It sounds like U of A is the prefect school for you. It is THE safety school for So Cal kids who are looking for the party scene, frats, big sports, etc.

From what I have heard from kids in my town: LMU is easier academically. Both schools are fun and social. LMU is small and professors know who you are which is good and bad... some kids want to be able to skip a class or two or sleep through a lecture every once in a while in college without anyone noticing. Everyone I know is having fun at both schools with or without frats and with or without sports. Long term benefits: UCSB may be better for post graduate opportunities. LMU: Unsure because it isn't as widely known.

Thanks. I'm really starting to like LMU.

More comments would be appreciated.

B U M P

Well I've pretty much decided LMU is amazing...and I think it is better than UCSB.

thanks for the help.

If you like LMU, you might also want to look at the University of San Francisco, Santa Clara, and the University of San Diego.

Yah I definitely want to apply to USD.

But I don't want to go to northern california so USF and Santa Clara aren't options for me.

You might also like Chapman and Redlands.

If money is a crucial factor, take a closer look at the UC's you're interested in.

http://tinyurl.com/369f6d

Are you kidding, LMU over UCSB? In my opinion, LMU is not even comparable to UCSB. It is the best school on the west coast hands down if you take in academics, social life, environment, mentality of the community/faculty.

Yah I'm one of the strongest supporters of UCSB on this website and I personally think UCSB is the best school in the country (after University of Miami), but I just think LMU may be a better option for me due to its close contacts and internship availability for my major...business with entertainment marketing. And if I want to get into the entertainment industry LA is more preferable than Santa Barbara.

But we'll see...if I do get into UCSB, it will be one tough decision.

As a Groucho, I see a lot to like in LMU. It depends on the student & major.

Fwiw, UCSB is a great place to go to college, a horrible place to have to study.

I mean, you're lying on the beach, trying to study for midterms, and a cute girl comes up to you and says something like, "You don't know me but would you mind if I jumped you just to relieve my stress?" Long about the fifth time in a day and the mood for studying is completely shot.

TheDad:

Which beach did you say that was?
