LoA/Appointment/Nom

Reposting this because it got deleted, can someone tell me what the differences between these three are and how you get each one?

Thanks

LOA= letter of assurance- given to highly qualified candidates usually without a nomination. for some it is because their CFA is missing or dodmerb hasnt been cleared yet. most are given early in the process b/c nominations come out between early dec to late jan. this means that if a nomination is received or dodmerb gets cleared, whatever the circumstance, the you get an appointment. it is a letter to basically say there is a spot waiting for you as long as u get everything completed.

Appointment- actual acceptance into the academy. you get a nice padded folder with certificate.

nomination- can be given by a congressperson, senator, VP, or pres. for people that dont get nominations, they are put on the national waiting list. a few hundred cadetships are granted from that list.

how to get them- apply, turn in all paperwork and complete it early. be highly qualified i guess..

LOA: The board finds you physically (passed the CFA/PAE), medically (by DoDMERB) and academically but you have yet to receive a nomination. It basically guarantees you an appointment provided that you receive a nomination. You might find it similar to "early action/decision" for other schools. It's the academies' way of expressing their interest to very qualified candidates.

Appointment: Triple Qualified plus nomination AT LEAST. There are people who are Triple Q'd with Nomination who do not receive appt though.

Nomination: Apply through Conressional sources. The materials to submit/deadlines differ for each Member of Congress.

i dont think west point does the qualification letters like navy does. the only time i received a letter was when i was told that i was fully qualified for an appointment but was put on the national waiting list. i didnt get an academically, physically, and medically qualified like i did with navy.

Ay ay ay, sorry to hear about your waiting list. You were still directly admitted by USNA though, right?

yeah! go navy! and um go army!

Have You already accepted the appointment offer or are you going to see how the waiting list works out?

im waiting to see how the waiting list turns out. i go for a visit to usna feb 24-25. i making my decision the day after i get back from navy. its taking west point too long!

You can receive a LOA without some of the items you mentioned. My LOA came while I still had 2 medical disqualifications. I did, however, have a nomination at the time.

Son's LOA came in July with no CFA, no DODMERB, no personal statement, parts of the app in complete. They had a faxed transcript with board scores.

Good luck to you Sparkle and Shine, I'm heading to USNA earlier for CVW on Feb. 12th.

From WP prospective.net:

An LOA is a conditional offer extended to a limited number of outstanding candidates, usually before they have nominations. Around 200 are issued each year. They start issuing them in July and most are usually gone by late October (a good reason to get all of your paperwork in early!). They are conditional on the candidate completing all of the outstanding admission requirements (CFA,DoDMERB, receiving a nomination etc).

Advantages of LOAs:
1. You are removed from the competition in your congressional
district to be #1 candidate. You just have to be one of the ten candidates who get a nomination.
2. West Point does not lose outstanding candidates who have been knocked out by other outstanding candidates in their congressional district.

Can you get an appointment without a nomination?

An LoA isn't binding is it?

Thanks again

Nalcon - No, a nomination is required before an appointment can be offered. An LOA is not binding.

The nomination is the legal requirement to get in, every candidate needs it before they get an appointment. Many people get appointments without receiving LOA's though. An LOA isn't binding, and an appointment isn't either. They just mean that you have gotten in. Its pretty much like a normal college, than you have to send them a reply saying whether or not you accept.

soccer1458- Don't forget about the national waiting list for people without nominations or people that get turned down in their nomination category.

Isn't the national waiting list designed only for qualified nominated candidates?

Forgot about that sparkle. Good thing you're always there to keep me in line!!! Man, what would I have done without you at camp and stuff!

I heard the national waiting list was for people without nominations or those who have gotten turned down in their catergory. but yes to the qualified part.

The national waiting list is for people who are qualified academically, physically and have a nomination but did not get the primary nomination from their senator or congressman. I may be wrong but I believe only one person out of the usual ten persons nominated will not be put on the waiting list unless they were given an LOA.
