LOA CVW and Current Athletic Commitments

Hi I'm dad looking for some advice.

My son received his LOA and has now been invited for CVW. The question that he's going to ask me is 'what about my commitment to football and the team on Friday's game?' He's a starter and a big part of the team. There is the same concern for his NOM interviews.

In my opinion he should forgo his games, speak to the coach, and explain his situation with apologies for not making the games. But he is the captain and needs to show good judgement.

Thanks

There are many 'CVW' throughout the year. I think the weekends run as late as March (or maybe even April). I don't think it would be a problem to change to another weekend. Just explain the situation.

Not a problem for your son to request a date later in the year. Mine moved his CVW from October to January due to XC where he too was the team captain. Your son just needs to contact his regional director.

^^^^

Two competing issues here -- commitment to team and son's future. Both are important. This is actually good training for life. I agree that is worth calling CGO and seeking to reschedule, after explaining his importance to his team. There are quite a few available WEs.

As for nom interviews, I would be surprised if they are on Friday night (night of most h.s. games). However, they do tend to be on weeknights, because that's when the citizens on the committee, many of whom work, are available. While it is not desirable to miss out on practice, I would do so to attend the nom interview for the following reasons:

(1) These interviews DO need to be done in the late fall because noms are due to CGO before Jan 31 (and, realistically, Inauguration Day for those MOCs who will not be in office after that date).

(2) As noted, the committee members schedule at their convenience, which typically is a weekday evening.

(3) An interview is critical for MOC noms that require them (a few MOCs base decisions solely on paperwork).

(4) Football practice and devotion to the team is important but this is his future which, in my view, is more important.

Congrats on the LOA, FlyinHigh. My son received an invite to CVW in today's mail and we will be scheduling based upon other commitments as well. I was reading another thread about CVW and never did see the question answered as to whether this is a positive sign?? Son has all parts of app in to Academy, everything done with Rep, Senators and VP, has completed BGO interview, although BGO has not submitted his evaluation to USNA. He attended Summer Seminar as well. He would also be "flyinhigh" if he got an LOA, but is figuring on waiting it out over the winter!

Congrats FlyinHigh. You should be. All GREAT signs of USNA's interest in your offsrping. As others have said, the CVW thing is highly flexible, and you should have no problem scheduling for a later date.

I agree. My son had football and numerous other responsibilities to work around in the fall. Interviews were held on Saturdays. He did the CVW in January. We found that people tried to work with different schedules when possible.

In our state the Senators nomination interviews were held on Friday and Sat of the same weekend - There were interviews scheduled all day on both days. This was the only weekend that the interviews were scheduled. The Saturday interview spots did conflict with the State Cross Country Championships. The Congressional interviews were scheduled later in the fall. In our district, that interview was also on a Saturday.

If for whatever reason you cannot reschedule the CVW, your son will make up for the few nights of missed duty to his team with many years of duty to his country.

flyinhigh: welcome to making choices and determining priorities. The CVW can be put off til Jan or Feb...just call them. When it comes to nom interviews, if your state is like our state, you will get a letter telling you when and where to report. My son had to miss school as his was in the middle of the day on a Friday 40 miles away. The MOC was on a Saturday. Because his board didn't see nearly as many, he was more flexible (son was at USMA visit that weekend and was able to have the last time slot allowing him time to return).
Best wishes to your son!

My plebe was offered several dates to choose from to attend a CVW.....he decided on a mid-April date which occured during his HS Spring Break allowing plenty of travel time and a final visit to another East coast university as well. There were approximately 150 candidates in attendance that CVW.

While one may have choices and reasons to reschedule, all consideration should be given to attending the earliest session possible. The intensity of the plebe experience tapers off as the year progresses and a false picture may emerge. Also, as the year progresses, plebe escorts may become more cynical and jaded, which may, while being a true picture, present the pendulum a little to far in the other direction.

But it is most important to remember the reason for the visit in the first place, is the Academy for you? What if you find out in mid-April that you hate the place? It would then be a scramble with financial aid and all the other peculiarities of another school. Knowledge is power. Get it at the first opportunity possible.

^^^ Yes I agree with that. I noticed some of that cynicalism late in the ac. year at another academy when I did a day visit.

Sort of a side question here. After we RSVP for CVW will we get a little notice or should we just show up and assume everything was documented correctly?

You'll get a few more mailings prior to arrival.

Thanks m3b, I'd hate to drive all the way Annapolis for nothing. (Although a party at Cantler's might justify the ride)

You're welcome. I hope you find what you are looking for once you are there!
