LOA for class of 2013

My S received a LOA today. It was dated July 11, 2008 so it looks like they sent it right after receiving his 6th semester transcript since his high school told us it won't be able until 2nd week of July. My S is extremely happy and excited.

Great news - congratulations to your son!

WOW! That is early! How exciting for your son!!! Get going with DoDMeRB, and who knows...his appointment could be there by fall!

GO ARMY, BEAT NAVY!!!

AWSOME!!!! Congrats to your son and family!!! That is GREAT NEWS!!!!!

Time to start lifting and running EVERY day. Make sure he takes protein after he lifts.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, we didn't expect it this early. He's DODMERB papers came early July and all of his medical exams should be done by next week.

This is the time for early LOAs to be sent out to a select few - a good reason for candidates with great stats to get their 6th semester transcripts mailed in....

Enjoylife,
Congratulations to you and your son. Wow, it sounds like he is on his way! I'm really happy for you. Stay in touch with us during the rest of the process.

what did your son submit to USMA? and what were his scores like?

Thanks O2B@C. I'll make sure to stay in touch.

USeagle2: I believe my s submitted his SAT scores (2220), transcript (I think top 5% out of 600), his awards (some local & national), and his EC positions. He attended SLS and passed the CFA and had an interview(?) while he was there.

Congrats on the LOA. My son is currently at CBT for 2012. I'm sure he wished he had worked out more. I suggest your S/D get a trainer and set up a workout program to prepare for CBT for the class of 2013. Being physically ready would be great. The LOA indicates academic preparation. Then there is the mental part.

I recomment reading all your S/D can on CBTand West Point to get mentally prepared. There is the excellent video series. "Surviving West Point" and there are a number of books. One in particular that is good is titled something like Four Years at West Point. It is from a writer that was given a short-term assignment and ended up gathering infor for four years. The administation gave him unlimited access to cadets to write the book. It would give your S/D excellent background infor regarding what it is like there.

Of course, nothing will prepare him/her for being there other than a firm commitment to West Point, the Army, themself and their classmates.

Good luck!

Mikydoo: the book to which you are refering is called: Absolutely American. The writer is from Rolling Stone magazine. He typically writes expose' type stories, and went to dig up "dirt" on West Point. He planned to stay a few weeks; four years later, he had the basis for his book. It's a great book, read by our entire family!

Haha, I confess myself intensely jealous. Congrats to your son! It sounds like he deserved it. I hope he enjoyed SLS; I certainly did.

Best of luck with the workouts too :)

Please remember that very, very few will receive the "coveted" LOA. Once you report next June, no one will know or care. No one will know (or care) how many nominations you had, sports letters, presidencies, etc...Do your best now to present the best total package and don't worry about the LOA. You will hear that many, many times between now and when appointments start going out.

PS: If you are an athlete, and you think you are good enough for Div 1, contact the coach NOW!! There is a "potential recruit" form on the athletic web site.

Probably the best book I have seen on West Point is "Duty First"--It has an excellent account of what life is like for the 4 years at West Point with particularly interesting and informative sections on Beast. I found it a lot more informative than "Absolutely American" which tends to focus on several individuals and their particular experience at the Academy. Congrats on the LOA---get everything in on time as there is usually a "deadline" date (beyond which it may be rescinded) contained in the letter.

I agree with Shogun on Duty First - it is a book that I have read over and over. I like how it explains the method behind the madness

Congratulations on the LOA - make sure he applies to all nomination sources he is eligible. At least - 2 US Senators, US Rep and VP.
One more bit of unsolicited advice - even if your son is sure that he will accept his USMA appointment when it arrives - have a back up. Medical situation can and have cropped up - Beast is over 11 months away.

^^^thank you for your advice. I appreciate everyone's advice and comments because there are a lot of things we don't know about SA admissions process. I know my S is reading/following instructions he's getting from WP but it helps to hear opinions and advices of those who went through this process.

Yeah, my S will definitely have a back up plan or two. You never know what might happen...
