Sorry if this question sounds lame. Was wondering if Duke has any preference in specific high schoolers from NC/Raleigh Durham area? Especially when considering local kids for admission along with usual requirements.
Judging from admission stats, Duke does seem to admit a lot of students from all over North Carolina, probably because the yield rate is higher with NC students. We have 3 students from my high school who got in to Duke this year, and we live in SE NC.
Thank you @peach0v0 was trying to pick a high school in RTP area and wondering if it made any diff which school we picked, but good to know it is based purely on merit and not specific to a particular school. Thanks again.
I think even in areas there are no established programs, almost all colleges show a preference for local high schoolers.
I don’t know about Duke but collectively Ivies accept an extraordinarily higher percentage of NE applicants compared to other states. Biggest preference is to applicants from top prep schools and poor area magnet schools, feeder school is the term.
Exactly, I was struggling all morning remembering that term “feeder schools” ? thank you @CupCakeMuffins
Its a balancing act. Top publics have many competitive applicants so you its harder to stay at the top. Getting into UNC from Chapel Hill for instance can be very difficult. Getting into Duke is playing the lottery no matter where you go.
Appreciate the input @scubadive, you are right top public schools have more competitive applicants than others and ultimately it all boils down to the resume of the applicant and their skills. Than the high school.
