location advantage

hey guys,
on columbias website, it seems that a lot of people come from the east coast. does this mean that there is a lower acceptance rate for those that do not live there? im a westcoaster, so im hoping that doesn't lessen my chances of admission? dont they want people from all over?

No, it is the opposite. Columbia loves diversity, so they will try and bring students from different places. Example: Being from North Dakota is actually a huge advantage when applying to Columbia because it is the only state that didn't send anyone to Columbia last year. Don't worry, while the west coast definitely isn't as appealing to them as north dakota, it is not going to hurt your chances of admission.

dz2 - The Columbia rep at my D's HS open house was able to tell us exactly how many students applied from our state and whether they were male or female. They also said that like all other IVYs they are looking for bassoon players (euphemism for unique) who have the correct stats. They basically said that you have a better chance if your state is not well represented.

Does anyone have the data for how many kids were accepted from each state? I live in Idaho, so I was wondering how underrepresented we are.

anyone also has some info about acceptance data for Canada (specifically western Canada)?
