Lockheed Martin National Merit Scholarship Discontinued after Class of 2016

I was hoping my son could apply for the 2017 Lockheed Martin National Merit scholarship. I was having trouble finding the online application for it. Finally, I called National Merit today and a very kind representative just broke the news to me that the Class of 2016 will be the last eligible for it. LM informed NM late in 2015 that they had decided to discontinue it. :frowning:

Sorry to hear that. I know that we were happy that both of our kids got the Northrop Grumman National Merit awards. I hope NGC doesn’t discontinue being a sponsor.

However, if your child is applying to any schools that provide large NMF awards, it may not make much difference.

Just got the email verifying this at work today. Both my kids are very fortunate to have been awarded this corporate scholarship. Sorry to see it discontinued for the younger kids of my colleagues.

@mom2collegekids That is true although the corporate scholarship was significantly larger than the NMSC sponsored part at most schools (one if not the only exception being Alabama). Of course, tt was also nice because you could take it to any school.

Just confirming, you have to work for the company for your child to be eligible for the corporate scholarship, right?

@nw2this - yes- a full-time employee.

My DH worked for Lockheed for 32 years & retired 2 years ago. Went back to work part-time.
Neither of these would qualify my DS to be eligible for the award. :frowning:
