loft?

Looking at the website I saw something about loft beds. Has anyone ever had a loft bed put in? Is it expensive and does it save you a lot of space and give you more privacy?

To me it seems a little daunting, just judging by all the rules you have to follow to get one. http://reslife.wustl.edu/cur_res/loft.htm
I was fine without one.

eleph-How high off the floor are regular beds in dorm rooms? Can a file cabinet or dorm fridge fit under the bed?

Rather than fully lofting your bed, you can get "lifts" (I don't know what you call them) at Bed Bath & Beyond or a comparable store that you put under each of the 4 legs of the bed--like putting the bed up on stilts. This gives you a LOT of storage space under the bed, without making it a big structural issue.

If you are one of the older dorms, you have room to put a dorm fridge under the window in the room. Why do you need a file cabinet?

I was thinking that my D could use a cabinet with a drawer that locks, and the best thing I could think of is a file cabinet. Where do students keep valuables? Or just stuff that you should not leave in the open, like a passaport, bank statements, etc.?
