BTW my parents think that I have absolutely no chance at all (well I have to agree that they're probably right; I'm not very optimistic about getting into MIT, especially since I'm Asian) and they won't let me apply to MIT.

hey dong_xoe, where do you live? If ur in CA, you should just apply to Stanford, Caltech, and UC Berkeley and be over with it...unless you're obsessed with MIT...

Well I'm from MA, btw I'm applying to Caltech(maybe chances are slightly better for Caltech?) and possibly Berkeley. See from my home to MIT is like 20 minute drive + 15 minute train...

ye the caltech+MIT EA combo should suit you well

hey! i am going MIT Caltech EA combo!!

you definitely have a good chance for both!!!! and you never know till you give it all you got! so work those essays!!!

rainynightstarz:
person #1 : 3x AIME
person #2 : 1x AIME, Science Bowl, Science Fair
person #3 : 1x USAMO, 3x AIME
the #1 can be compared with/beat by #3, , but person #2 with other things, can't really be straight out compared with the other two.

i think USAMO is more impressive..........unless for science you have something equivalent to that (USAPhO or stuff). but math still > all others

from your username and sat score, i come to the conclusion that you have moved to the united states from china recently (<5 years, maybe). that info can change things around a bit. oh and are you international applicant or domestic?
nice job on 2*usamo and arml (i think i got 6 that year).
however, i have to agree with some of the above responses that your lone emphasis on math may make you sink into the stereotypical MIT applicant pool.
lastly, i do think you should apply; there's 0% chance to get in if you dont apply. plus, some good essays can fill in the "holes" of your application.

jw how can coming from China recently change things?
I moved here when i was in 6th grade ( not really recent but jw)

i think that provide a background for slightly lower reading/writing scores.

OH SWEET!!! -_- grr still gonna hurt my chances.. wtv. I did my best

Engineering is, in simple, creative science.

What can you do with math? How can math be applied to whatever course you may find yourself selecting?

I agree showing passion for math is great. But you do need to show a bit more than that.
