LOL, I was taking my abstract algebra book with me, and someone asks me...

him: "dude, aren't you supposed to be in school? what grade are you in?"

me: "uhh, i go to university"

him: "so you're taking it easy?"

me: "well there are several levels of algebra"

him: "yeah, algebra I, II, advanced algebra"

me: "uhh, it's abstract algebra. it's beyond calculus"

him: "cool"

(it's Artin, which just says Algebra in the cover (not abstract algebra like Dummit/Foote puts it)

sounds like a regular conversation to me. Then again, most of the people whom I talk to have a less than average IQ :)

so,how did you meet them?

me? or IK?

we went to the same school/ go to the same uni.

Pathetic, but unfortunately common.

Did you want him to start worshiping you? Seems like a generic conversation...

That's about like how I have to explain to everybody why I'm taking the SAT instead of only the ACT. I'm taking the SAT October 6th, so if anyone asks when I'm taking the ACT, I just say October 6th. It's a fib, but it's way easier than going into an intricate speech about the differences between them.

um, wow, someone didn't suspect it was abstract algebra because it just said algebra. what a moron! good call, calling him out on a message board.

^ Lol.....
