Lonely at dorm

I am a sophomore transfer student at Northeastern University. Since I am a sophomore, and considered an upperclassmen, they placed me in one of the apartment dorms. Apartment dorms suck because I felt that not many people open their doors and it is really hard to meet people in the dorms. I don't even feel like I am living in a dorm, instead I feel like I am living in an apartment. :/

What doesn't help is that I cannot be transferred to the Freshmen dorms, and that is how people actually meet each other. My floor doesn't have a lot of people, compared to the Freshmen dorms, and it is really hard making friends.

I tried attending events, but it seems like the welcome events are made mostly for freshmen students only, and those freshmen students seems to go to these events with people in their floor. It is really hard for me to join in, since I live in a different apartment.

Anyone transfers here, especially from my school, who are going through the same situation or have gone through the same situation? How did you deal with it? NEU folks, how did you meet other people?

I'm just feeling quite lonely in my dorm.

My daughter is at Northeastern (she is a sophomore but did her freshman year there). Check out the activities fair they have this week and sign up for a bunch of clubs. She enjoyed several fun clubs last year and it is a great way to meet people of all grades. What about your suitemates - try socializing with them - go out to shop together, cook together, etc. There will also be dorm activities run by RAs for your dorm (they don’t just do this for freshman dorms). And don’t fret classes start tomorrow and you will meet more people then. I also think there are some welcome events just for transfers - check those out.

BTW last year in her freshman dorm the doors locked shut automatically and nobody kept them open (so it was not much different from the apartment housing)

I am in the exact situation. I’m a transfer sophomore currently living in 204 Hemenway and I hate the fact that no one here seems to want to socialize and I feel lonely all the time. I talked to the housing department and will probably move to Coventry or Davenport, where I know most sophomores are but I was just checking to see if things had gotten any better for you.

Hi Wade,

You feel lonely while staying at the dorm by yourself. You know what, I am now on student exchange in Canada. Since I’m a final year student, it did take me some time to meet new people. If you wanna meet more new people and make friends, try to be more proactive. Sit with the “loners” at the canteen, talk to them, they will happy to chat with you. You can even make friends. :)
