Looking for a Good Economics School...Chance me

Hi, I'm new to the site. So far I think that it is great. Here are my stats as of right now. I'm looking for a school with a good economics program. I wasn't too happy with my ACT and am taking it again. I go to a small school so we AP options are very limited but I'm taking a few college classes at Iowa State next year, as well as taking AP US history and AP Calculus next year.

Gender: M
Location: Iowa
College Class Year: 2013
High School: Public

GPA - Unweighted: 3.46

Scores:

ACT: 30

Significant Extracurriculars: Part-time Lab Technician at Iowa State University in the summer.

Athletic Status -
Varsity Golf (9-12)
Cross-Country (9-10,12)
Basketball (9)
Volunteer/Service Work: Over 200 hours including mission trips to St. Louis, Memphis and Kentucky back country.
Honors and Awards: National Honor Society

Right now I'm looking at a few schools but I'm open to suggestions:
Cornell (Will probably apply ED, my dad loved it there and I really like the school)
Emory (or Oxford, not really important to me either way)
Dartmouth
Rice

Any more?

There's also

Uchicago - Undisputed champ of economics and intellectually focused.

Carnegie Mellon - 6 Nobel Laureates in Econ in rapid succession, great job networking, career prospects, and business school integration.

Stanford, Harvard, and Columbia have great econ programs.. you should have no problem getting into those :)

but seriously, University of Chicago is AMAZING.. I would definitely go there over Cornell.. in fact I am apply for econ as well!

check out my list: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/506523-please-chance-me-big-guys.html

Oxford, London Business School, and London School of Economics are world class but they rely heavily on test scores so you would need to boost that ACT.. they might not even accept ACT, as far as I know, only SATs..

UMichigan is good in case you can't get into Chicago/cornell

Good luck!

i'm also taking a look at UNC at chapel hill as well. maybe michigan too. doubt i can get into stanford

anyone else?

make sure you have some safeties in there.

Cornell (Will probably apply ED, my dad loved it there and I really like the school)
Emory (or Oxford, not really important to me either way)
Dartmouth
Rice
Stanford

All of the above will be tough except Emory-Oxford campus.

I have a couple safeties as well just wanted to list the ones i'm really looking into. Dartmouth and Rice are pretty much out and will be replaced with North Carolina and another school. Not sure which one yet...Safety-wise the Oxford campus of Emory and a small LAC called Centenary which is in Louisiana are my two favorites. The plus at Centenary is that i can probably play golf there as well.

If I were good enough to play college golf at say Cornell would that have any weight in their decision of admitting me?

Also what do you think my chances would be at:

SMU
TCU
San Diego
Nebraska at Lincoln

SMU: your ACT puts you above the 25-75% range (24-29), and your GPA is right around the average, I would say your chances are pretty good.

Southern Methodist University - Dallas, Texas

Your ACT score also puts you above TCU's 25-75% range.

All these schools (SMU, TCU, San Diegeo, Nebraska-Lincoln) would be either matches or safeties for you. Good luck.

Dartmouth out!?! o.O Noes!

How many colleges are you planning on applying for anyway?

I'm gonna cut it down a bit. Right now the tentative list is:

Emory
SMU
TCU
Nebraska
Campbell
Centenary
Iowa

The only one i really feel is a reach is Emory but I have heard awesome things about their business program so I think it's worth it. May also try Oxford College of Emory if I don't get into Emory's main campus

wow has no one brought up UPenn-Wharton...it's not ranked as the highest by Newsweek...but Newsweek is retarded and uses a bad rating scale. It's often refered to as the top econ university in the country. It's undergrad program usually is so strong that it's econ graduates find grad school at anywhere reduntant and useless.

Btw...looking at ur GPA and ACT score (and ECs)...i'd worry less about which is the best econ school and start worrying about making urself good enough to get in...

Well, Wharton rejected me. My stats are available. =[

cgar, I also realize that I won't get into Penn. I haven't really totally shored up my EC's and I'm going to take the ACT again and the SAT subject tests. The only one that I really see as being a reach is Emory which is probably my favorite right now but if I don't get in its not going to kill me. I'm thinking my GPA is going to go up a bit as well. Not a whole lot but some. Thanks for the help though guys!

and Taggart you got into Dartmouth no? One of my friends who is really bright, valedictorian and got a 33 on his ACT is thinking about applying there.

Yeah. I'm going there this fall.

And cool. If he has any questions or wants to see my essays or anything, contact me. =]

alrighty man
