Looking for a Quirky and passionate college. Moving across the country, HELP!

I live in central New York, I have my entire life. However, I have always wanted to move out of New York. I am focusing mainly on Portland, OR or somewhere in that area, or Colorado. I am a very active person, health freak, gym rat, vegetarian.

I am majoring in Psychology, hoping to continue on to Graduate school majoring in clinical mental health counseling.

My main concerns finding a college are as follows:

Housing: I must have access to an actual kitchen, I need to cook my own meals. Preferably some kind of University housing available rather than residence halls.

Small class size, but I'm not concerned about campus size.

Liberal, quirky, friendly.

My grades from college a few years ago are not great because I was going through a lot at the time, so that has to be a factor. I believe my GPA after this year, will be around 2.5, maybe a little better. Maybe if I could find a school that is willing to look beyond just grades.

Some schools I have found and really like are:

Portland State University. For some reason, I keep coming back to this school. I know it is a state school, so that worries me a little, but I really have been drawn back to this school every time I search. University housing, Portland, quirky. Seemingly everything I am looking for.

Colorado College. Quirky, university housing, nice environment. However, I don't know if my grades are nearly good enough.

Does anyone have any advice? Do you go to PSU? What do you think of it, with me coming from so far away?

We just did a tour of Colorado College with my D- beautiful campus but in a conservative town. My understanding is that the students lean left politically. The standards for acceptance appear very high though- go to their website for specifics. What about Naropa University in Boulder- one of my S’s childhood friends ended up there and loves it. Boulder definitely has that quirky vibe going on though.

Thanks. I looked up Naropa. It will definitely be added to my list of potentials!

Can you afford the out of state tuition?

Does Reed have kitchens? Maybe look there.

You might have a look at Evergreen State in WA and Humboldt State in far northern CA.

almost all colleges in the U.S. will require that you live in campus housing and have a meal plan freshman year unless you are a commuter. Most dorms do provide limited kitchen options but at whatever school you go to… your options will be more varied after your freshman year.

Look at Lewis & Clark in Portland. Colorado College, unfortunately, is well beyond your reach right now…
