Looking for a School...and Lost

Hi, Senior in highschool....Having a slight crisis :. I thought I was going to art school, until this summer, but I decided I might want to reconsider my life aspirations...I want to keep other majors open.

So now I'm looking for the right school and I feel like I'm overshooting.

My SAT's are Low, 1600. Yeah I know, I probably wont be getting anywhere with THAT score, I've done lots of practices since that test (May) And the practices show my scores improved by about 200-300.

Stats:
Ranked 2 In school (Will be ranked 1 at the end of year)
Unweighted GPA: 4.0
Weighted: 4.3
Taken every AP class offered at school (Got and currently getting A's in all of them)
SAT II: Lit: 600 US: 630 (Taking again next week)

Extracurricular:
Drama:
Stage Manager for theatre
Supporting Actor in a Show
Leading role in a show
Some community service here and there.

So, The schools I looked at so far: NYU, Reeds, UCLA, UC Berkley, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UCSD.

Yale and Stanford are the holy grail...

Tell me what you think? Thanks

Add a couple safeties in there and then you’ll be set. Are you in CA?

If you do get a 1800-1900, you will be pretty well off if you do live in CA.

Yeah I live in California. Thanks for the comment!

Sage, Any idea why the discrepancy between your grades and scores? Non-native English speaker, learning disability, just a poor test taker? I’d probe further into this and ask your counselor to help explain in his/her recommendation. Your gpa and rank are excellent and it looks as if you have good ECs, so I wouldn’t fret over your scores, but it helps to address the reason for the inconsistency.

You might want to look into test optional schools or try the ACT.

Also, are you already involved in art? If yes, then you should consider art an EC and plan to submit an art portfolio even if you do not end up majoring in art. Many schools, especially the small to medium sized privates, value art and theater experience as they need artists and actors in their campus communities. It’s up to you to figure out how to communicate your interest and activity levels in your application, through supplementary materials, essays, recommendations etc.

If you’re open to small liberal arts colleges (like Reed) then I’d suggest the following that are receptive to artistic and theater talent: Oberlin, Vassar, Conn College, Hamilton, Kenyon. Smith if you are female. Some of these are also test optional. You could check the internet for the list.

Thanks so much momrath, I really don’t know why I get low scores on my SAT’s, I was born here in the US, I personally think it’s a sense of unpreparedness I placed on myself the days of the tests, hopfully we will see improvement in the three test days I have left. I am also taking the acts, to keep my testing windows wide and open.

Actually I am still planning to major in art, I’ve been paintinT on my own since 9th grade, I have works that I will be submitting in a portfolio. I’m hoping to get some new works done in te next few months but Im finding myself really busy. Some art colleges (Pratt, MICA) are offering portfolio critiques on select days, I plan to take advantage of those.

I do prefer the more liberal minded city…Reed is my favorite because it’s in Portland and right next to Ashland (once a theatre nerd always a theatre nerd). Thanks so much for the comment, I plan on researching those colleges in the morning.

How about some of the top SAT optional colleges like Middlebury, Holy Cross, Bowdoin

More or less Urban/suburban liberal arts colleges that might be attractive to an art/theater person who likes Reed include:

Sarah Lawrence (NYC area), Macalester (St. Paul), Colorado College (Colorado Springs CO), Vassar (Poughkeepsie NY), and Wesleyan University (Middletown, CT), in addition to the ones Momrath suggested.

There are others (especially in more rural settings), which you’ll probably start discovering quickly if you have any interest in exploring these. The SAT medians at all of the above are higher than what you now have, but if you like a couple of them then try to boost your scores and take a shot. With your grades and a strong portfolio, you may have as good a chance at some of these as at the more numbers-driven public universities.

Eugene Lang College is a less selective LAC in Greenwich Viillage, not far from NYU. Probably a pretty good location for a theater person, no?

Also Bard (NY), Hampshire (MA) and Goucher (MD). All three are test optional also. Best of luck!

Okay, so I retook those SAT subjects and I got even worse! 540 Lit 600 US history…I’m actually kinda angry becuase The day I took it in June (My highest scores) I was sick, tired, and halfway through the test I kinda didn’t care anymore. This time I was focused and I felt like I knew almost every awnwer…Oh well…I got ELC acceptance into UCSB, UCD, UCR, and UCI…So thats pretty exciting!

Congrats on your great acceptances!

I don’t know if you are still considering Reed, but I just saw this thread and wanted to comment on Reed being “right next to Ashland.” Ashland is a LONG drive (4-5 hours) from Reed. Portland is still a wonderful city, of course!

Congrats also and best of luck!
