Hi everybody,
My daughter is currently a high school junior and has an interest in attending medical school in the future. I have been trying to find a summer program for her, for medicine, but they are all so expensive! I cannot afford to pay 4000 for a 2 or 3 week program. She applied to the Brown program last year, got in, and got no financial assistance. It was heartbreaking. Does anyone know of any affordable premed programs for high schoolers???? We live in CA, and it would be great if we could find one near here(the Bay Area). I know Stanford has programs, but they are extremely competitive. Thanks!

UC Davis and Santa Barbara both have summer research programs.

Baylor has HSHSP.

Depending on how close you are to a local university, research anywhere serves the purpose.

What about volunteering in a hospital? Obtaining EMT or another medical certification?

In one of her first college board tests, my daughter marked biology as an interest. We subsequently received quite a few of these summer medical leadership type mailings from pricey programs that seemed designed to persuade anxious parents that attending their medical leadership conference was the ticket to med school admissions (and part parents from their money). Think about it. When you apply to med school, do you think they will care any more about some few weeks program you did way back in high school than the colleges now care about some camp you attended way back in middle school?

OP, this one is in NY, unfortunately not near you at all, but for anyone not too far away it’s $1200 for 1 week residential and $800 commuter. <a href=“Office of University Admissions | Adelphi University”>Office of University Admissions | Adelphi University;

My daughter attended the medical NSLC program, and they usually have one in California (she attended one at
Berkeley). We could not afford it and so she applied for financial aid and received some! This program was a pivitol experience for her and she used components of it for her college app essays.
