My sons enrolled in CTY writing program. We were not impressed with it. They actually got better help in their famous high school. Looking for recommendations as if parents have any good recommendations for my 7th grader daughter. Thanks
The reason I ask as writing is ver important skill to have in prep school and college admission and the in professional word. It is a skill that I count most important and more valuable than math and science. We are looking for really good program if someone know please suggest. We will pay $$$$$ to enroll if the program is good. Thanks
I agree with you. Clear and concise writing is a skill they will use for the rest of their lives. Its hard to teach writing over the course of a single summer. My son went to a boarding school, and I noticed a big change in his writing from 9th grade by the time he graduated. It takes many years and countless rewriting.
Through google, we found one great program which is focused on teaching writing skills to students. The program is being started and taught by Harvard students. It is focussed on kids who are enrolled in grade 5 through grade 12. Teacher’s bio data looks great. Daughter has enrolled in one class for the eyrewritingcenter to try out and improve her writing skills. Let us see.
@casinoofny what is the name of the writing program?
I tried to send you a response that included a link, but maybe that’s a no-no as it’s been flagged. I suggest you google “Coursera writing.” Coursera offers many university writing programs online, many for free. I was going to send you a link for one class on English Composition from Duke that got good reviews and seemed like a basic student writing class, but there are many others you can look at. Coursera is a terrific resource.
@silverpurple I sent you a PM. We did attend the open house and liked it. Therefore trying some classes.
@tkoparent Thanks we will try “Coursea writing” but daughter wanted a live interaction and feedback on her work. That is what we loved about the program as someone is explaining. The person who is going to teach is a Linguistics concentrator from Harvard. He recently won the Fulbright Fellowship to teach English grammar abroad in the Czech Republic. He currently serves as an Undergraduate Fellow at the Derek Bok Center for Teaching & Learning, and he has previously served as a research assistant for Harvard’s Linguistics Department and Graduate School of Education. We were impressed. Let us see how it works out.
@casinoofny , agree, that sounds terrific. It’s good to get going on this early.
@tkoparent when we came to this country as student we made sure that we invest in kid’s education from early on. I will keep you posted if we like the program or it is not worth it. Learning enrichment is a life long process.
@silverpurple Name of the program is Eyre Writing Center.
Please let us know how the Harvard writing class goes. I would love to know! As for CTY, my D enrolled in “From Structure to Style” writing class, and she felt she learned a “medium amount.” Therefore, we thought it was beneficial. She said that she would recommend it. Some background: Her 7th grade SAT scores were 780. So she already has good skills, and if she got something out of the class, then I say it was good.
@SuburbMom that is an outstanding score. I will let you know. I am sorry if I misspoke. It is not Harvard writing Class. It is taught by students who are either current students or graduated from Harvard.
