Looking for cheap schools - other than my state school?

I'm applying for transfer during a year off and I've changed m mind a lot about what I'm looking for. I've finally realized two things:

1) I want a big school.
2) Holy crap, I really really need to go to an affordable school.

Luckily those two things line up - my state school is large, as are most.

HOWEVER, since my state school is also quite competitive, I'm actually worried about not having any safeties. (My high school transcript is very good, SATs are great, have a great resume, great internship experience with a great rec from my boss...but my grades suffered at college. A lot.)

I might go to the local branch of my state school if the main campus doesn't work out - it would certainly help with the cost - but I'm concerned that I might want more options when I'm deciding what to do.

Help? I have NO idea how to distinguish between state schools. I know nothing about them, except the ones that are too competitive to be safeties.

Thanks in advance!

The state schools with the lowest tuition rates seem to be those in the mddle of the country such as South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming.

What is your home state? Many schools belong to cooperatives that cross state lines for reduced tuition.

How's your financial aid eligibility? Depending upon your family's circumstances, private schools - even ones with high sticker prices - may turn out after aid to be as cheap or cheaper than your in-state options.
