Does anyone have any suggestions for colleges that have both a Biotechnology major and a Pre-Vet major/program/concentration? I already know of SUNY-ESF, but I wanted to know some more options
We’re going to need parameters…preferred size? Public or private? Location? Urban or rural? State of residence? Vibe? If you type in 'Pre vet" and “Biotech” as must-haves into the college finder at the top of the page, you get a lot of results.
The ones that stuck out to me were:
Bigger schools: SUNY Bing, Rutgers, Umass Amherst, RIT
Smaller option: WPI
My friend is pre-vet at WPI and absolutely loves it. She got a good deal of merit aid and has really enjoyed her hands-on classes.
What does a biotechnology major offer that bio or biochem or biomedical engineering wouldn’t?
Virginia Tech.
Qwerty, I’m pretty open about the type of college I want to go to. I just don’t want it to be too big, a party school, or in the middle of a big city. My only location request is to stay out of RI, or places that have really high temperatures (like Florida in summer). I prefer public schools for now, just because of cost. I’ll keep the schools you listed in mind
Only IN STATE publics, then? Because out of state publics can carry a hefty price too.
I’m from RI, so I’m going out of state anyway. The costs are still expensive, I know, but hopefully still a bit cheaper… I’d be willing to look at private universities as well
OOS Public Us are not cheaper (except for some in the Great White North). So how much can your family afford?
My grandfather’s a successful orthopedic surgeon, so we’ve saved a lot for college. However, I still have grad school after this, so I would personally prefer to not go to a college that has very high tutition.
Also, I have high grades (4.3 unweighted GPA), lots of honors and AP courses, and a lot of extracurriculars
You might actually want to look at smaller colleges where you’d qualify for generous merit packages. I think most four-year colleges with good life science departments can prepare you adequately for Vet School.
What kind of scale is your 4.3 un-weighted GPA based on. Did you see my question above about biotech as a major? In many places that’s a lower-level vocational degree. Higher-ranked schools tend to offer bio, biochem and biomedical engineering - any of which can place you in the same lab tech jobs as a biotech major, or better.
But would going to a school that offers a specified pre-vet undergrad program look better to grad schools?
Some veterinary schools have a requirement for animal nutrition. You have to fulfill that online if you go somewhere that doesn’t have a specific pre-vet track. The advising can also be very helpful. Plenty of veterinarians graduated from schools without a pre-vet track, however. I had a very good friend who did it from Harvard - I think she had an informal advisor in the bio department, although I can’t remember for sure.
Anyway, for the third time, what about the biotech major? Would you consider bio, biochem etc. instead? that would make the search easier.
I’m not even sure what scale my GPA is on. My high school is confusing in their GPA scales, for example I know someone who has a 5.2 GPA. All I know is that on the site where my grades are posted (online, my school uses Aspen), it says my unweighted GPA is a 4.3.
As for the biotech major, I’m currently taking a biotech class, and we were able to tour a pharmaceutical company, and it interest me. Since most colleges don’t offer a major for pre-vet (as in I’ll need another major), I thought of taking that as my major, while still doing the pre-vet concentration for grad school. Should I go for a biomedical science major instead (for better prep for vet school)?
Would recommend WPI.
Vet school is like med school. They don’t care what your major is as long as you fulfill the requirements. So go with what you like and what you can get the best GPA in.
I apologize for not responding to your question about the biotech major sooner - I’m using the app on my phone, and if I’m writing a response, nothing else will load, so I didn’t see your comment until after I posted something else.
I’ll look more into WPI. Do you have any more information on their pre-vet program?
Don’t worry about it, dude! It’s only the internet.
All I know about the pre-vet program is at this link:

I did have a very good friend who did MIS at WPI. He loved it there, is now making bank. So I would recommend the school in general.
Ok, thanks for the help! I’m going to try to find more schools with Biomedical science (not engineering) with possibly prevet
I was going to say that WPI would give you great merit aid for those stats. Glad someone beat me to it. Don’t quote me on this, but I also believe that WPI has a very strong connection with Tufts vet school. It was one of the reasons my pre vet friend ended up picking it (along with the small close-knit student body and good merit aid).
