Helping my son finalize his list of schools. Making sure we’ve haven’t overlooked any potential hidden gems. LMU is at the top of his list, which also includes U of San Diego, Santa Clara U and U of Denver. Any others we should consider? In FL, but wanting not to stay here. From CA so strong pull to go West. U of Denver because he’s outdoorsy but he’s not so sure about the snow, although he skis and wants to learn to snowboard TIA!
Seattle U may be worth a look. Willamette if he’s willing to go small.
Wake Forest and U Richmond are good options on the east coast.
Concur with University of Richmond.
If the OP is inclined to look in the northeast, Bentley University and Babson College in the greater Boston area might merit a view.
Geography might not work but Butler fits everything else described. Can’t say enough about the Business school experience my S18 is having there and the career services/internship work.
Looked at them early in the process. They are great schools but he’s not looking in the Northeast. TY
Will take a look, ty.
Did a tour in NC. Wake Forest is a consideration. Will look at Richmond. TY
Elon seems to fit the bill too
Denver is not that snowy. It will snow, sometimes a lot in one day, and then it is usually gone in a week. A lot to do on campus (rec center) if the campus gets snowed in. Also the light rail runs through campus and that’s rarely shut down because of weather.
YES! Elon is on the list (how did I forget?!)
I loved DU! My son thought it was fine, but he literally fell in love with LMU. He was born in So Cal, and we have family there, so it’s top of the list, but I think it’s important he has options. TY
William & Mary, Emory, Tulane and SMU outside CA; Chapman in CA?
U of Pacific in Stockton, USF, Pepperdine although perhaps too religion.
U of Portland.
Depending on what he wants to study, U of Az (MIS) and ASU (Supply Chain) are job magnets. Yes, they’re huge but both have wonderful Honors programs…and U of Az the nicest Honors dorm I’ve seen. Sort of the - you can make a big school small but not vice versa.
Good luck.
St. Mary’s (CA) is one of those hidden gems. Business is the most popular major on campus by far.
Echo SMU. My oldest had an excellent experience in the business school, and got a fantastic job on graduating. Dallas is booming with companies moving employees/headquarters there. So more job opportunities post-college.
Thx, looked at Chapman. The campus was very small and did not pass the vibe check.
Considered Pepperdine, but agree, it’s more religious than I realized. Looked at U of AZ, and also agree there are many pros, but it’s quite large and a lot to navigate and it’s land locked. Are you familiar with the MIS program at UofA? It seems more managerial and I think my son is looking more at finance. ASU is enormous. Gonna take a look at U of P. USF, I don’t see him there. Great suggestions! TY
When you are looking at midsize in CA - the only other one I can think of is Redlands. But you are saying no land lock. And then no religion.
I think you have the solid list - mainly the catholic privates in CA are your mid size. Gonzaga is in Spokane - so probably too far inland. USC - not easy to get into and skews large. UOP - and well some state schools - many such as Bakersfield and Stanislaus are mid size - but will you get a good deal aid wise?
I think you have a good list.
SDSU has Honors…but it is also huge.
Interestingly, we found U of Az quite manageable - because it’s mainly long and rectangular. U of A is known for it’s MIS degree (#4 year after year) but MIS is certainly not CS.
ASU is enormous with multiple campuses.
Thx again for the additional insights. We actually toured Redlands at the suggestion of a college counselor and although we felt very welcomed, the campus was limiting. Not much to offer in the way of dining, recreation, etc. - it just felt very small. A pretty campus, but with very old buildings. Not terrible, but didn’t make the cut. I went to 'SC (in the 80’s!) and it’s become much more competitive and although we looked, my son is looking for a different vibe than heart-of-the-city. I asked him if it had to be CA and he said he wanted the best schools. So the net will be cast wider as we try to nail down the list
Texas Christian University. When you mentioned SMU, you reminded me that some friends have a daughter who graduated recently from TCU with a business degree; and she had an excellent experience there.
