I've asked for very similar advice here previously and got lots of good advice. I don't necessarily agree with DD's decision to major in business as an undergrad (I think Poli Sci or Econ might be a better idea, as suggested here) but I'm trying to respect her choices and support her in finding a good match. We'd like for her to have a LAC type of experience. We live in California suburbs and she's set on the idea of experiencing life outside of California and in a city (a safe city for mom's mental health, please! ;-). From the list we received the first time, Boston College and Wake Forest seem to fit the criteria. Boston College looks pretty good - are there enough non-drunk kids? :-) Drinking and partying isn't her thing. Wake Forest: She visited family in NC and it was a lovely area, though Wake Forest being reported as strongly Republican and Christian wouldn't be a good fit for her. Anyone with good knowledge of these schools? What other schools would fit the bill?

I would think the analysis of Wake Forest being strongly Republican and Christian is probably a bit of a stretch. It is a national university with no religious affiliation and from what I have heard/read, the student population is pretty moderate with representation at both ends of the spectrum. The professors, like most institutions of higher learning, are probably liberal.

babson and bentley in boston

Wake is fairly conservative and not long removed from Baptist heritage, while Boston College leans Conservative and as Jesuit school is very Catholic.

I like your idea of a econ or poli sci major (or a psychology major. . .best prep for a management career) and would offer these options: Macalester, Trinity (CT), Barnard, Swarthmore (suburban) or maybe U of Chicago.

Nice mid-sized urban unis with undergrad business programs include University of Denver, Emory, Carnegie Mellon and Babson.

yeah Emory, Bentley, Babson, Denver, Carnegie Mellon and a few other schools have great business programs with a nice mid size populatin near or in cities. They should work well for you.

I keep seeing everyone on this board suggesting Trinity-CT.... DO NOT LET YOUR DAUGHTER COME TO HARTFORD, CT. She will a) probably hate iit here and b) be scared of getting shot all the time near campus... it's in a really bad area

BEWARE

Put University of Tulsa on the list as well. Merit dollars are also there for good students.

Have you read/checked out crime statistics for major cities in the US recently? New York City is the safest large city in the United States,

Barnard , a tiny enclave in a charming part of Upper New York is where she should go with an urban LAC feel plus the ability to take classes accross the street at Columbia

University of Denver. Very fine business school, famous music school, reasonable liberal arts, small undergraduate population, lots of international business internships.
