Hello Everybody! I am a Minnesota resident (white male) and I need some help deciding where to apply regular decision. I have already applied to 5 “local” schools early (Hamline,UMN,St.Thomas, Drake, Iowa State) and I have heard back from Hamline (accepted early admission into business school) and Iowa State (accepted into Econ department) but I want to apply to some reach schools.
My stats:
GPA: weighted: 3.6/unweighted 3.4
ACT: 29
Class Rank: 203/462
School: t10 MN public school
Class Rigour: taken 10+ honors and 9 APs by the end of high school
(AP GOV, US, PHYSICS, LANG, EURO, COMP GOV, STATS, MACRO, LIT, )
Leadership: Captain of Mock Trial team, church Sunday school teacher volunteer
Accomplishment: team took 5th place at the state mock trial tournament out of 242 teams
-Single parent household
I have no preference for location in the US. Thank you.
What are your interests? If you’re interested in business/economics, I suggest you apply to a few liberal arts schools (e.g. Hamilton, Colgate) and a couple of private research universities (e.g. Wake Forest University, University of Richmond, Emory’s Oxford College, Santa Clara University).
What is the situation with your other parent? What can your family pay?
My father passed away when I was 5. My household income is less than 60k, so I would need lots of financial aid to attend a private school.
You could try Dickinson in PA as a reach. Your GPA is a bit low, but you wanted reaches. They meet 96% of need (their definition, of course). They also care about interest, so (1) get onto their website and get signed up for emails from them right away, (2) attend if they have any open houses or programs in your area, and (3) assuming they still have some sort of “Why Dickinson?” essay, spend a fair amount of time on their website looking for specific reasons why they seem like a good fit for you.
Lawrence is another school you might look at in Wisconsin. Run the net price calculator on their website before applying. I’d say you’d have a pretty good chance at getting in there.
