Looking for schools that..

Does anyone know of colleges that meet these criteria:

-In or near a city.Major metropolitan area not necessary but must be somewhere which is not just a college town, preferably >100,000. Not NYC.

-Small or mid-sized. <7,000 undergrads.

-Geographically diverse.

-Intellectual and maybe self selecting. Apparently in years past when U of Chicago wasn't so difficult to get into it was a perfect example of this. Strong academics and an intellectual peer group without admission rates below or approaching 20%.

-Strong sense of community. Liberal alcohol/drug policies.

-Decent financial aid.

Schools I'm looking at: Tulane,Haverford, Reed, Macalester, Occidental, New College of Florida, Case Western. Any other suggestions?

Even though admission rates have changed, I don’t know if Chicago is necessarily more difficult to gain entrance to than in years past. I still see people with strong intellectual interests and passions gain admission with somewhat subpar stats. The essays are still a weighty part of the application process, so you might still want to apply and see how things work out. Chicago loves passionate students, regardless of their stats.

Weslayan and Vassar. Rice meets some of the criteria.

I also suggest Rice.

Hopkins? Although, I don’t know how their financial aid is.

Tufts, Case Western Reserve.

Rhodes College:

-In Memphis, TN which has about 1,225,000 people in the metro area.

-about 1700 undergrads

-44 states and 15 countries represented, 75% come from outside TN.

-Definitely intellectual - what does it say when a college’s largest, most expensive, and most popular building is the library? Admissions rate between 40-50%.

-Very tight knit community. Don’t know what you had in mind re: alcohol/drug policies; you can evaluate for yourself at [Rhodes College | Campus Policies](http://www.rhodes.edu/studenthandbook/2178.asp)

-Students received around $30,000,000 in aid last year.

Very good suggestions, thx.
By the way, anybody know anything about the University of Denver? looks like a decent safety

Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
