I’m currently attending a tier 1.5 school but not doing so well (2.9 gpa, expected to fall even more this semester) and I’m pretty unhappy socially. Im considering changing majors but I realize i might be doing so poorly because of my unhappiness. Would it be worth it to transfer to a lesser recognized, but still decent (tier 2?) college, that I’m sure I would be happier at socially, and hopefully academically? I’ve already invested 3 semesters and alot of money here, and tried changing my approach many times to try to like this school and its people but it hasn’t worked out. But I’m not sure if its worth it to stay and suffer or transfer and have a better college experience and gpa. I would like to graduate on time but I realize I may have to postpone it if necessary. If anybody has some insight, tips, advice, or anything I would greatly appreciate it because I’m really unsure of what to do
I get a sense of where you’re coming from and I would first and foremost recommend trying to see a mental health professional on campus or off, they can really help with talking about what’s bothering you specifically and finding plausible solutions.
Running away from the social problem at your school may not be the best idea because it might teach you to remove yourself from situations that make you uncomfortable (which is very normal and understandable, like the fight or flight response), but if you know this school firsthand and feel more comfortable on campus then do what you have to do to ensure your emotional and academic success.
Whatever it takes to get you back on track and secondly assures your future, go for it. There is no shame in having to address things that are deterring you from your happiness and well-being. You know your options, run them by a psychologist or psychiatrist.
From my experience, the priorities should be this, again feel free to disagree but just throwing some food for thought
- health/well-being/happiness
- academic success in terms of GPA
- financial matters (can be switched with #2 depending on your situation like you’re paying for college out of pocket or are going through a rough patch)
- time spent in school/efficiency
Best of luck, feel free to message me if there is any other insight I can share with you. I have been in your shoes and trust me there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Props to you for seeking help on a forum with people who can really relate to your story. @thefreeway
