HI. As I am preparing to write for the common app I am afraid that the universitys I am apply to will see my topic as unrelated to their particular school. For example, I am interested in UNC Chapel Hill for the pre-med program. However, I am extremely passionate about the arts due to my amazing experience in my high school choir. I was wondering if I write about choir will UNC think I am not the best fit for their university, due to the fact I don't want to pursue a choral major? Thank you in advance.

Don’t worry about it! I know exactly how you feel: I’m also interested in pre-med but I love to sing and I’ve been in choir for almost my entire life, so I’ve written about that for my common app essay because it’s something I love and am really passionate about. It’s really not going to hurt you to write about your passion; if anything, it’ll turn out a much better essay and will enhance your application overall much more than would an essay about your interest in medicine. Good luck! If you ever need any further help let me know, I’d be glad to be of assistance :)

You can be passionate about something that you are not going to major in. Most students wouldn’t really know that they have a passion for say, electrical engineering. Don’t worry about the essay topic.

Only the admissions office is going to see your essay, not the bio department or your faculty advisor.

Thank you so much, this is more comforting! This site is going to keep me sane through this college admission process i swear…
