Question about the essay

<p>I have an important question regarding the common app essay. I am writing on the free choice, and I have written about some passion of mine outside of school, which is mainly a hobby but I have extended it to a broad scale by putting up exhibits at science centers and judging competitions. </p>

<p>I was initially wanting to write about how this is linked to my intended major (computer science and computer engineering), and how it has helped me develop my passion about this subject as well. However, I'm beginning to wonder if I am supposed to do that?</p>

<p>This is mainly because, some schools that I'm applying to have supplemental essays which ask me to elaborate on my passion for my intended major and how I got interested in that subject. </p>

<p>As such, there may be quite a bit of overlapping on those 2 topics. So is that topic a wise choice for common app essay? Or should I stick with my topic and just remove the intended major part in my common app essay or use this essay as my supplemental?</p>

<p>Any advice will be really appreciated!!!</p>

<p>Im planning to use an EC, mainly a hobby for both the short and long essay, each describing a different part of it. Short essay more in depth on my involvement and long essay on how it has effected my life.</p>

<p>Since you have so little time really to talk about yourself in the common app. Why would you write about the same EC in both the short and long section? I would think the adcoms would want to know more different things about you so I would not think writing on the same topic would be best.</p>

<p>I think it is more possible to write about your main passion in your main essay and elaborate on what specific events brought you to decide to major in it to in a supplement. You might try a quick draft/outline to see if you have enough content to do it.</p>
