Looking to apply as a transfer...

Currently a freshman in college, want to apply as a transfer for fall 2011 (will have Associate's Degree by the end of the year, 14 credits in progress and 19 for next semester). Any transfers on here with advice? Is there a transfer thread you could redirect me to? I couldn't afford to attend as a freshman, but my family income has increased since then so now I'll be able to go if I get in. :) The program I would apply to is Creative Writing.

No one?! :P

I think there is no transfer thread particularly because the pool of successful transfers to CMU is incredibly small. You are competing against freshman applicants to those programs, and the freshmen get preference. Creative Writing is a little more lenient it seems; I know a few transfers in the program. If you would like some names to get in touch with I can give them to you, but they all transferred in as juniors, not sophomores.

You are far more likely to get in as a junior, because programs only admit by space. This year’s freshman class was extremely heavy and there are a crap ton of new CW majors, so the odds of there being availability in the program right now would theoretically be very low. However, some people transfer to different majors/colleges, so by your junior year there might be some more space (and thus better odds of getting in).

You should also get a portfolio ready, and make it your best work. The three transfers I know are pretty much the ‘big names’ of the CW department; they came in already having internships, published work, et cetera.

Thanks for the info. I remember you helped me out a lot last year too. Do you know of any sophomore transfers? :/

No, I don’t… we have had a lot of kids from other majors switching into CW, so I think we have less space in my class. We’ve had several bio majors, a few stat majors and 3 CS majors (to my knowledge) switch into CW, and they get first preference over transfers. :/

hmm. maybe I should wait then. :/
