@ss109 is there any chance you would want to switch to a major not related to the ones in your thread title here?
Yes- that’s exactly why Emerson is not a fit for me. However, I did consider it and toured it this past summer. I just don’t want to be boxed in in case I want to change my major down the road.
Why not USC? Just curious.
SFSU has a good program and is in-state - if you haven’t looked. CSUN too.
USC and actually UCLA would be good for these majors, but both would be big reaches for this student, I believe. She has enough reaches already…
Looks like she would prefer to be NOT in CA, and on or near the east coast.
@ss109 how much aid do you need? Actually, what have your parents said they will pay annually for college? And again…have you run the Net orice calculators for the colleges on your list?
Is BU affordable without your parents going into debt (adding, I’m the proud parent of a BU grad…and in the arts. But we incurred no debt to send the kid there).
We’ve run the calculator for all of my schools and they are affordable.
I attended a program at UCLA this summer and they said flat out that they take 15 undergrad students in the film program a year. USC is just such a reach that I don’t want to bother.
Overall, I do just want to go back east and have a few California schools on my list to appease my parents (LOL).
I’m debating taking Temple off my list and adding Syracuse or Ithaca.
If you want urban, then no Ithaca.
So you want film, not journalism? You should look at Wisconsin Milwaukee.
If you are worried about USC’s #s, you might ask BU about their population. According to college factual, there were only 7 film majors in 2020.
Make sure not to “strain” your folks - the reality of the field is - most aren’t successful and those who do make little.
Good luck.
PS - you have 20 common app spots, you can add without removing.
Why ED to BU? Why? What makes it stand out so much more than any other options?
Affordable without your parents taking any loans?
My opinion…if this student wants to do film/production, they need to be at either a very well connected school like Emerson, UCLA, USC, Chapman, OR they need to be near where this industry is located. At this point, I really don’t see either on their list, except Chapman.
My question still is…why ED at BU?
We went through the same process with S21. Very similar stats. Aced verbal but mid math and science. He had similar concern. What if I don’t like film? What if I like History or something else?
My advice was go to best film program and if he changed his mind then transfer. Don’t look for schools that are middling for film/journalism just-in-case you might change your mind. Why limit your options?
If you want to go into film or journalism go to a school with top notch facilities. Go to a school that has the best professors and connections to help you succeed.
That’s where a school like Emerson or Syracuse shines.
I would recommend getting a double major or at least a minor just in case the dreams of film don’t materialize. You’ll want to be able to support yourself in a decent career while you’re working on the bigger goal.
