haha thats very true. i have had the same two best friends since i was 4 and when we were younger it was ALWAYS 2 v 1. but who knows, i will probably put i prefer a double not a triple. I don’t want a bunk bed though!

Luckily for me, I don’t need a lot of space. Though, I don’t like the triple rooms with the beds that have desks under them.

The room I saw wasn’t a bunkbed. There was two loft beds with dressers under them. They weren’t that high off the ground at all. It was a nice set up but no space. I’m still going for the double. There is room layouts on the UCSC housing site. I don’t believe that Porter had bunkbed at all (I do not know about the desks under the beds though)… I personally didn’t see that in the sample double dorm I saw.

I saw on one of the housing set ups if it is a triple, i think all three beds have desks under them, thats about as far as it goes. I just meant i don’t want to sleep high up, not necessarily meaning on a top bunk above someone else. oh well. so it was in the transfer community building? were they pretty? i want an email like now about housing so i can figure that stuff out =]

That’s cool that you got to check them out. I figured the rooms would be small and hopfully they will have more double than triple rooms. I would rather have a double myself. How many rooms are in the transfer community?

I thought it was very pretty. They were building the transfer building that we will be in. I’m guessing it will be done this summer. I wish I would hear from housing too : ) I understand not wanting to sleep up high! I don’t know how many rooms as we kinda just went in one in Porter. The transfer one is still being built.

Ah, I see. Is it Sept yet? I want to give my notice to work already lol.

Haha! I know right! Can’t wait!

syayaca: They’re not building the transfer community, they’re renovating it XD. They’re housing transfers (and upperclass Porter students) in Building A. It’s being renovated like Building B was last year. Although I guess one could argue they’re still building since floors are being added…

But anywho, I have the email from housing for continuing students and it specified Building A for transfers and upperclass students. So yes, those transfers living on campus will be staying in that building that is finally starting to look not so gutted now ;)

Not sure where I’m being put. I requested upperclass area or substance free. Have a frosh (sophomore next year) friend I’m hoping to have a room near, but I don’t think Joe will let her sneak her way into rooming in Building A if that’s where I get housed ): </3 I’ll find out soon, though. Continuing students start picking our rooms here in a couple weeks.

Oh okay! Thank you for clarifying that : ) I really didn’t know until the woman I talked to pointed at the building that appeared to be in the process of being built. You said something about continueing students being able to pick their rooms? Does that mean that incoming transfers just get put in any rooms not picked by continuing students? I suppose it wouldn’t matter since most transfers dong know many people anyway but I’m just curious!

I think if would be seperated by floors. Like they have certain floors designated for continuing and some for transfers. I mean the continuing students in the “transfer community” would be living in apartments right? Not the dorm set up like for transfers. But what do I know.

syayaca: No problem I just like to make sure people understand that fact so you don’t get a shock when you see the lower floors are obviously the older building. The new floors in B Building are very obvious when you walk through them (fifth and sixth floors).

And I don’t know how incoming transfers get their rooms. I was assigned mine, but I was a winter transfer so I was put where ever there was a space available for a single. I have priority as a continuing student at senior status (with housing guarantee still). The tutorial showed a way to use other people’s sign up codes (with their permission, of course) to be able to put them in the same room as you. No idea how this works for the new group. I’d guess incoming transfers and then incoming frosh will get priority with whatever rooms are left? Really unsure here how it works for fall.

Harass Joe. He’s awesome and he likes people who ask questions so that they’re well informed beforehand :D

dchaves07: You don’t have to be in the apartments as a continuing student (and remember the “continuing students” I’m talking about being in A Building are upperclassmen so juniors and seniors, not sophomores). I’m choosing dorms myself since they’re doing the “rate saver” option for continuing students who choose the dorms. It’s almost $800 according to their information. My math worked it out to $900 for me ;). And separations are more likely to be halls than floors (three halls to a floor: north, south, and center). But we’ll see what happens. I’ll know more in a couple weeks and will report back if anyone is interested :)

But yeah, you can choose whichever housing type you want as a continuing student (no guarantee you’ll get your first choice, though). It’s awesome having choices <3

Kender- Thank you for all the very helpful information. Since you were a Winter Transfer, how do you like it there at UCSC? Whats your overall experience as a trasfer student? Just wondering since you were new there not too long ago : )

Overall it’s been very good. Winter transfer is both good in the sense that I was not competing with people at move in and my mom and I were able to very easily move me into my dorm room (which, in hindsight, was stupid to do by ourselves; I should have called my brother to help). However, it was awful in the sense that my “welcome week” was a roughly two hour welcome meeting the day before classes started. I was lucky enough I’d already looked up all information I needed to know and had been talking to departments for months to get the rest of what I couldn’t find online.

Everyone was very friendly. I did run into problems that since there’s far fewer transfers in the winter, most assumed I should already know things around campus. Trying to get my majors declared took a lot more footwork that I feel it should have. But I also have the problem of looking young so I’m often mistaken for a frosh who shouldn’t have to worry about these things yet. Transfers have until the end of their second quarter to declare their majors, by the way.

Living with frosh has been interesting. I have a single room so it’s not too terrible and I did make a very good friend. I think her mom is happy her daughter has a “decently responsible, older influence” at school XD. Anywho, the frosh are, for the most part, easy to get along with. You’ll be with transfers so that shouldn’t be an issue. I definitely notice a huge maturity difference, though. But that, I think, would have happened no matter when I entered. Biggest example I can think of is they talk about “careers after college” and I talk about “just getting a job to pay back my loans and survive life, but a career would be nice if it works out that way after college.”

Campus takes a little bit to get used to, but I highly recommend wandering around and just exploring. It’s all very safe here (but still always be aware of your surroundings, of course). Getting lost was the only way I found my way around. You’ll eventually find all the little shortcuts and such that will make getting to your classes easier/faster.

I am absolutely in love with the campus. It’s like camping, but getting college credit for it. It is a lot of hard work, but it’s fun. And it’s such a beautiful area to be in. I took a long time to figure out what I wanted in life and where I wanted to be to accomplish it, but in the end, I managed to find my place :). I was criticized for only applying to UCSC, but it was the only offer of admission I knew I would accept so why waste the money and someone’s potential spot?

It’s not for everyone. That I will admit up front quite readily. It is very isolated and is very much not a part of Santa Cruz itself. It’s an easy Metro bus ride down to Santa Cruz, but they feel like two different cities.

Anywho, transfers seem to be pretty well accepted overall. I’ve certainly never encountered anything negative. Usually just shock at my age.

Awesome information Kender! Thanks!

Wow! Thank you! You have had quite the experience : )… Which is great!

Hey, I’m Patrick, my appeal came through so looks like I’ll be going to UCSC
I’m a Film and Digital Media major. I choose Porter and Cowell as my top two choices and I can’t wait to live in the transfer community :)

Hey Pscholler. Did you get into the film and digital Media major yet? I’m still waiting to see if any of my credits transfer over to film which seems unlikely.

hey do you guys know the soonest we can register for fall classes? I was assuming it was after june 1st

@Indyerhardt: Its my proposed major. I have to take the lower division film classes for the major because they didn’t offer them at my CC. I wanted to take it during the summer but its full. So I will have to wait for fall.

@bdawg12: not sure but I will be enrolling at orientation most likely. :)
