To be honest, I’m really unhappy at Davidson college. I know it’s a great school, but I don’t think it’s the right place for me. I’m currently a freshman on the mens soccer team, and I’m worried about giving that up, but at the same time I’m not sure I truly love soccer anymore. I love UNC and have plenty of friends and family members who went there and go there and I’m positive I would be happy there. I’m terrified of what my friends, teammates, and coaches would say/think if I transferred, and I’m worried i would regret leaving such a great school and quitting soccer. I’m disparate for advice, anything would be appreciated. My grades are pretty solid, so I’m not too worried about admission. What should I do?
Sounds like you have 2 issues: (1) Do you want to stay at Davidson?; (2) Do you want to continue playing soccer? My advise is that you seek out someone to discuss these issues, such as the counselors at Davidson, your friends, or your parents. Your friends and even your coaches will probably be more understanding than you realize. Many students go through this uncertainty. Perhaps, without soccer, Davidson would be a better fit. Maybe you’ll adjust better 2nd semester. Or maybe you do need a change.
Also, please realize that 1st semester of freshman year, especially when playing a sport, can be a very stressful time. Over winter break, you will have plenty of time to reflect. After a long reflection and discussions, you can reach a reasonable decision. Finally, your fear of disappointing others is reasonable, but many of us have made decisions at some point that may seem strange to others, and we survived. Good luck.
