Lopsided as heck

I want to apply to engineering (computer science and engineering) at the following schools:
Berkeley (cali resident)
UCLA
Cornell
MIT

However, my SAT score is quite a tragedy: 1470/1600 (670 reading and 800 math)

I also got 800 math 2 and 800 physics subject tests

I am class rank 1 and participate in many engineering related extracurriculars

Clearly, I am better at math than science
UW GPA: 3.97
W GPA: 4.65 (Calc AB, Calc BC, Stats, Physics 1&2, Chem all 5’s and A’s)

Do my STEM qualifications and choice of major allow my reading score to be ignored?

I wouldn’t say they would allow your reading score to be ignored, because English is an important skill regardless of what your major is. However IMO, you’re a very qualified applicant, and your SAT score isn’t bad in the last, it’s just that all the schools you’re applying to are so competitive (primarily because your major is so competitive) that your SAT score might put you at a disadvantage. So I would say that if you have the chance, you should retake the SAT.

Alright thanks wormholes. My problem is that I have no time to study due to familial commitments and extracurriculars.

A tragedy at 1470? Rip my 1400 :frowning: although I’m balanced at 700 each. I think your good for engineering though, since you have engineering related extracurriculars.

I wish I had balance LOL

It’s annoying when students say things like a 1470 is a tragedy. Tell that to the kids who would kill for that score. You are still in the 98th percentile. Your ECs are LESS important than your tests score. That is a poor excuse for not getting a score you knew you were capable of. You prioritized the wrong things. They will not ignore your reading score, not when the competition is so tough. There will be kids like you with better scores. Good luck.

Reading back on my post, I agree that I over-dramatized the score. I am happy about the score but the distribution is not ideal. Thanks for the response! I’ll be more careful how I word things next time :))
