Wondering if anyone has any insight into schools and how they view lopsided SAT/SAT scores. Like if a kid Can score a 750-760 in English but can only score low 600s at best in Math. Do schools only look at composites? Anyone have a kid in this situation who has gotten into schools where the composite score is low compared to the school’s median but the kid excels in one part of the SAT? Thanks
It is not all that unusual. And each college may look at them differently. Sure the composite is considered, but the individual scores are seen as well. So, as one example, if a person who scores in the low 600’s in math is applying as an English major it may be viewed more favorably than if he/she was applying as an engineering major.
Both of my D’s had a significant difference between their scores but they did manage to get the lower one into the mid-600’s. They did not apply to many schools so I do not have a large sample size especially since D17 was a recruited athlete. D19 was accepted to her reach school with a below average composite as a math major so I would guess that the admissions committee considered her strengths.
Many engineering kids have low English scores but having high math /science would be key for an engineer. So it depends on the major per se.
My D scored 36 and 35 on the ACT English and reading sections but couldn’t get above a 26 in math. She did very well in the college process. It was clear from her AP classes and activities that she’s a humanities and not a STEM kid.
My D’s was lopsided with her English about 200 points higher than Math. Three tries and she just couldn’t get math above 600. We didn’t aim that high for her college apps because of that. She applied as an English major and was accepted at every school including the one top 50 school she applied to. I think the high English score helped considerably. She even got significant merit from one school where her math score was below their 25%.
thanks- specific schools that seem to be willing to ignore composites and look at where a kid excels? for my DC it is English/reading and NOT math. thanks
