i've emailed them about this. i'm still waiting for a reply.

a month ago, i had missing verification forms. so uvm sent me an estimated financial aid award that included about $8000 of loans. and some grants, one of which was the henderson grant of $10 000. then i sent in my missing forms and they sent me an actually award package which was pretty much the same, except my henderson grant was taken off! and the $10 000 was added to my federal plus loan. does this make sense at all? is that even possible?

because i can't think of any reason why they would take 10 000 dollars away! it's a lot of money, especially to me, in my financial situation.

I can’t say for sure, hopefully it was a mistake. What was missing on the form you sent? We lost part of our grant at my son’s college because the estimated fafsa and W2’s were different from the ones for the following year. When things are “estimated” I learned you don’t really know until everything is settled.
Sometimes there is an error. Once when the government gave a 4,000 deduction to make your AGI less for the year, they gave us the grant based on our income without the deduction. When they saw their error they changed it.
It’s good you are on it and noticed it right away. Without knowing the paperwork, it’s hard to tell what made them do that.

there wasn’t anything missing on the form. it was just that they were missing the form. so i sent in the missing forms which are the dependent verification form, tax return and W2. and the information all matched my fafsa. so i don’t understand why the loss of $10 000. because that’s a lot of money to put on a loan.

I do too, call as soon as you can in the morning and hopefully it will be straightened out. This area, financial aid is a pain at just about every college.

Shouldn’t UVM have given you a final package before May 1st so you could decide? I have an estimated package right now. If they change it I am going to be VERY mad.

It is possible that there has been a mistake, so you should definitely ask. I do want to warn you that even though you are certain you filled out the FAFSA properly, you may not have done so. The school may have found something that was incorrect & fixed it. The only way you will know is by asking.

Another thing you should do…go into the FAFSA website and compare your SAR line by line with the one generated by the FAFSA you submitted. Schools can (and do) make changes to the FAFSA based on the materials you send them. There might be a change you can see there.

I really appreciate it when posters come back and tell us how the story ends. It really helps others who might face a similar situation in the future. Thanks!

i sent in missing forms to a private school & they ended up taking 5000 back. and the form was just my own student form (showing i had zero income contribution). it was beyond stupid but i ended up not going there anyways.
