Loss of interest in PhD?

K, I am 1 year into my doctorate (wah, go me). I have lost all interest in it. I consider just doing the MPhil and then calling it time.

Wise or not?

Many people discover that they aren’t as interested in their field as they had thought. You have another year to decide, right? I suggest reevaluating your career goals and pinpointing why you’ve lost interest. If you’re just not interested in the field anyone, then you should leave with the MPhil. You don’t want to waste precious years doing work that you have no intention of using and/or hate unless that degree is essential for what you want to do in life.

The one thing you DON’T want to happen is for you to leave the program, only to discover that you were wrong to do so, either because you were temporarily burned out or because you can no longer follow a desired career path. Think carefully so that you are completely confident with your decision.

I may just opt for the mphil. I have no intention of dropping out sans degree, but phd is so much work.

Hang in there dude. You will find that the reward will far out weight the difficulty. I think you should take some time off to rediscover the passion that led you pursue your PhD in the first place. Read/Reread your favorite philosophers. Read other philosophers you haven’t get to know. Try a bunch of things. If all that still don’t regain you any interest then you should consider other options. I agree with Momwaitingfornew you should think carefully before making such a BIG decision.
