Hey guys, I have just started my second semester. I am a sophoommre and I'm taking a challenging courseload:

Spanish 2
Honors Biology
AP European History
Honors British Literature

and then I have Volleyball practice until 6 pm EVERYDAY after school.

I get home, shower, eat, and relax until 7, then i start homework..and I finish spanish 2 around 7:30, then take a small break, do biology, for an hour (9 o clock now) then I start on AP Euro. I spend 2 hours on that (11 o clock now)...and now i'm tired as heck. I then do honors brit lit, which takes OVER 2 hours a night to do, and it's a heck of a rigorous class. I sleep around 1 everyday, and I'm doing poorly in my classes now...I think due to stress?

I need more sleep...how do you guys get more than 7 hours a night? I don't even procrastinate anymore....there's no time for that when you get home at 6 PM everyday.

it's unusual to have more than an hour of homework from each of your classes everyday. don't try to stress on homework. just do the needed amount instead of overdoing it.

You could try to do some of your homework in other classes, or you can take about a two hour nap straight when you get home, and finish your homework at 2:00 and then sleep until whenever you have to wake up. But honestly, seven hours is a lot of sleep , and if you are already feeling sleep deprived with seven hours, think how you will feel next year during junior year.

lol are you kidding? more than 7 hrs?
Unless you can get something done during school and work nonstop immediately after volleyball .. that's usually what happens to high school students. Which is why I crash right after school if I have nothing to do immediately afterward, and start hmwk from 7-10 and stay up finishing it all.

here's the best way.
sleep in your regular classes. do homework for other classes in your honors. study in your AP classes.
for spanish, math, english, history that r regular or honors, study for test or quiz on the period or two before.

by doing this, i never get perfect scores, but i get 90+ which would average to about 95 with your homework.

I've only taken 6 AP classes(senior now), but even throughout those, AP Euro, Art History, Calc AB, English lang/lit, and USH, I NEVER had that much homework every night.

Stop focusing so much on getting your homework down to perfection... and spend some more time relaxing and being a kid while you still can.

It's very important you learn to manage time now, or you will be screwed next year.

PS: The advice about doing homework in classes is very good. I took this route and did well sophomore year. You are NOT ABOVE the normal student in terms of paying attention and slacking off.

Set an hour's time per assignment. Doing work under pressure may help you focus better. If you're not done when time's up, move on. When you have gotten through everything, go back and finish up anything incomplete.

I agree that folks who do well learn to really focus & be able to study in whatever setting they find themselves--even when folks around them are talking & goofing off. It's helpful to have friends that study during school & breaks too & also to study during study hall (if you have any). I've known kids who can study on bus rides to get to the games they're going to play, in doctor's waiting rooms, in the ride to & from school, whenever & wherever they find themselves. That can be very useful in later life as well.

I'd be extremely happy if I got 7hrs of sleep per night..
I've been surviving this year with 4-5hrs per night!

It used to be less but the best thing to do, is not relax after your ECs.. I used to relax till 9pm after soccer but I ended up finishing everything at around 3am.
Now, I try to get everything done straight after coming back from Ecs (after showering and eating of course). I've been able to finish homework at about 11.30-12ish, and have been able to selfstudy till 2.
goodluck! i love sleep.

i find myself being able to concentrate better and i can finish homework quicker right after i take a nice long nap. usually i come home from school and take a 3 hour nap, then do my homework and sleep sometime between 1-4 am so i still manage to have a combined total of 6-9 hours of sleep everyday. if i were to come home from school and do my hw right after.. it would probably take me twice as long and i'd probably end up dozing off in the middle. haha so naps are the key to success! ;)

I get around 10 hours of sleep every night.

There is this wonderful thing called time management. Now things have cooled down for me but earlier this year it was rough. I played soccer at school which involved travel almost every weekend, I'm a full IB diploma candidate, I had to do college apps, mountains of coursework, essays, presentations etc.

It can be done. Trust me, you just have to manage your time and perhaps give up some activities that you used to do. You need to take advantage of any free time you have in school, be more efficient on homework and do weekends as well.

You think that schedule is challenging. Just wait.

to the op: i can relate because i play 2 sports, so during both seasons i'm lucky to get home at 6- sometimes it'll be around 9 if it's a far-away game! now idk if you go to a v.challenging school, but i don't think you should really be doing that much hw. do your classmates spend so much time on it? i definitely think you're overworking beyond what's expected. some tips anyway:
-try to get your easy hw done at school- during breaks, lunch, free periods, etc.
-try to get ahead in your subject's hw. for example, if the teacher posts week's hw online or whatever, do it ahead of time. if not, at least do the reading/whatever you know will be required so that you dont have to spend as much time on that.
-just try to be more efficient in your working. i dont know any tips for that, but 2+ hrs on an hrs english course every night, even at a tough school, doesn't seem right. pace yourself better
-don't relax after your ec's, just charge right into the hw. set yourself a goal like "i'll be finished by 11pm". you'll be surprised how much quicker you work under that kind of time pressure.

7 hours is a good amount of sleep. I usually get 6 and half hours of sleep. I'm a IB diploma candidate and I do homework whenever I can. I have a 1+ hour commute to school in the morning so if I don't finish homework at night, I do it on the bus.
