Alright, I feel really embarrassed for even asking this question, but I am actually really curious to know if there are a lot Hindu girls at UC Berkeley. I happen to be a Hindu from Idaho, so I'm really the only Hindu kid my age that I know (Oh and this other kid but he's a guy too, so he doesn't count), so I wonder how different (diverse (not just Hindus, but minorities overall I guess)) Cal is and whether the question in the title of this post is affirmative. Thanks!

I can’t help you answer your question specifically, but this link may help.

[UgStatF2009 < Main < TWiki](http://osr2.berkeley.edu/twiki/bin/view/Main/[[UgStatF2009][]])

thank you very much!

lol yes lots of indians here, most of them Hindu (but not all that religious)

lol yeah i was wondering that too…except i was wondering about indians in general. i’m “hindu” not really cuz i dont practice anything but i’m indian. i wonder if ppl that are indian are americanized (like me) or if they’re going to be total fobs.

The only “fobs” are the international kids lol and they’re pretty recognizable. Everyone else is very Americanized. Most of them are from the Bay Area… where all IIT grads ultimately end up (like my dad haha).

And pretty much all the Indian organizations here like Indus or the dance teams are dominated by the Americanized Indians.

stop trying to segregate yourself, this isn’t prison

wow I’m not segregating myself. The majority of my friends are Caucasian, the rest of which are Latino or Native American. I’m not at all a traditional Hindu and my parents are Malaysian Indians anyway and they don’t harbor the annoying streotypes native Indians are plagued with (hope that didn’t come off are mega rude, if it did I truly apologize.) I was just curious how the new change of scenery might be that’s all. Thanks for the responses.

Honestly though, it seems like every American Asian (of any race) is always trying to prove that they are more “Americanized” than the other Asians or they mock the habits and traditions of those Asians with more traditional roots. I just judge people by how they come, not by their affiliated streotypes. (One again I truly apologize if I sound rude but it appeared that you all felt that I was planning on sequestering myself which is definitely not the case. I consider myself a very diverse, open minded individual, just as each one your feel about yourselves. I respect all beliefs).

u already are doing it, u live in potato island?!!! there is nothing there but potatoes.

Actually that is a big misconception Firapira(nice user name btw). The Boise area has the 2nd most number of software industries, second only to Silicon Valley according to our business bereau. My dad works at HP here as an engineer. I hope to change people’s misconceptions about Idaho when I get to Berkeley lol and make new friends. I also apologize for the Asian trying to be more American comment, I was just irked by the other posters saying I wanted to segregate myself.

Diivio - being at a very large university means that are tens of thousands of undergrads, enough to find any mix of people and any shared interests you want. Cal has conservatives to radicals, atheists to religious recruiting clubs, people from just about any culture and country.

As long as you don’t voluntarily cluster with people that seem just like you, you will benefit from the rich, diverse student body.

yeah you are absolutely right rider730, once again I want to apologize to everyone for being on end and saying some rude comments. I hope you guys can forgive me and I look forward to meeting all of you if I decide to go to this wonderful school (waiting till April 1st before I make my final decision)

No apology needed, we all know what it is like to be agonizing over a college choice, perhaps imagining that the decision can doom you forever if not made perfectly. Fire away with concerns and questions; if it helps you and others make a choice more comfortably, we (most of us) don’t mind answering.

there is indians at most colleges in the US, specially cali schools

@ Diivio: You seem like the right-minded kind of guy for Berkeley. As a transfer student, I’m still waiting on my admission decision. However, I’ve lived really close to Cal my whole life, and you definitely seem like the type. (Generalizing: Open-minded, logical, conscientious).

I wish ya luck here in the fall, and I hope to see you!

wow thank you very much for that compliment! I hope to see you in the fall as well! (although in all honesty, if I am lucky and fortunate enough to be accepted at Yale, then the probable better financial aid will drive me there instead)

Yup, there are tons of indians here and I would think the majority of them are Hindu
