Lottery cutoffs for fall 2012

What I don’t understand about the lottery system is why there are different cutoffs dates for different housing and why RAs are announced after most of these dates have passed. It causes way too much stress for freshman.

I think the Housing dept should hire the Business School to develop a new lottery system. When I did my MBA at Rutgers Newark there was a full year class called ‘Inter-functional Management’ where a team of students were assigned to a company to solve an issue. Not sure if the same thing exists today, but this would be a worthy topic.

nj2011mom you might want to email your specific question and any comments you have to the housing office at oncampus@rci.rutgers.edu I spoke to someone at the housing office recently and she said that they are committed to answering questions and welcome all feedback regarding the housing lottery.

You could post the response you get, here.

They must realize that the housing lottery process needs to be improved and all input helps.

Son will be housing on campus freshman year. What are good choices for Freshman Business students?

cherryhillmom my son is currently a business student. In your freshman year, the freshman advisor will schedule your classes for the first semester (you pick your 1st and alternate choices for electives). My son’s schedule turned out to be mostly on Livingston (English, Psych, Micro, Business Forum) with Calculus on Busch.

The next semester, he had classes on Busch, College Ave, and Livi. Note* freshman get last choice to pick classes during registration because they have the least # of credits. If you want to get at least a day ahead of most freshmen, make sure he either has some AP credits to transfer or take a summer course before freshman year starts so he has at least 1 credit in advance of Spring 2013 registration (they do not count your Fall course credits as they are in progress). One day doesn’t seem like much but freshman year, we watched as available courses became unavailable in a matter of hours, right before registration opened for students with 0 undergraduate degree credits.

My son wanted to live on Busch so he applied early and got that campus. He was one of the few business students in his hall but he liked his hallmates. Your son might want to choose Livingston as then he can walk to most of his classes. They also have a brand new dining hall on Livingston (that was not there when my son was a freshman) so he can make the most of the 210 meal plan that you have to purchase.

He could also live on College Ave or C/D, but since you have to take longer bus rides to get to Busch or Livi, I personally wouldn’t choose those campuses. Plus, the dining hall on College Ave is known for its terribleness.

You know it is really hard to generalize where Freshman classes will be. My son is also a 2nd yr Business student and as a freshman trying to finish up his gen ed requirements had most of his classes on College Ave (where he lived). He had a couple on Cook and Livingston but has yet to have one on Busch. As far as the busses, he says it is not bad getting to either Cook or Livingston from College Ave but going from Cook to Livingston or Busch can be a pain. Socially he really enjoys College Ave and has had a great experience there - it seems to be a good environment for meeting people and he never comes home or complains so I assume there is always something for him to do. He also studies a lot but seems to utilize the library for that.

I wonder if the freshman advisor schedules the first semester classes based on the individual student’s home campus.

I still think that Livi dining hall is hard to beat.

btw mamajay why does your son’s group prefer Easton over the Busch apartments?

rualum - from what you say it seems as if the Busch Apts would be more convenient for them than Easton but I think it’s what you get used to. They spent the last 2 years on College Ave and loved it and Easton is close by. They also have other groups of friends from their dorm (non-business majors) that have put in for Easton Ave.

Yeah I just tend to recommend (for freshman) the campus that the student will probably have the most classes on eventually. For a pharmacy major I would recommend Busch; I lived in the apartments on Busch and it was so convenient to get to classes. So for a business student, Livi. For an animal science major, Cook. Like that.

But really, any student can live on any campus. My son doesn’t like Easton due to location so I was just wondering why a business student might pick it over the more convenient Busch location.

Easton ave is a really good location, which is why a lot of students want it. I would say the same for rockoff, but rockoff is really out of the way, and not in the greatest of places, and for the price I don’t think rockoff is the greatest choice. Business students tend to live on Busch or Livingston, it makes sense

Easton Ave isn’t a bad spot overall since it is a <5 minute walk away from a bus stop and 2 bus stops away from all livingston classes and most busch classes.

Quick question. The building Frelinghuysen on College Ave…I assume those are doubles? If so, how are they?

@jpstevens: Frelinghuysen is a doubles dorm and it isn’t terrible, conveniently in front of the SAC bus stop so that’s always nice, my current roommate lived there last year and it was fine

In case anyone is interested,

Livingston 4 Bedroom Apartments:
General Statistics
Number of 4-Bedroom Apartment Applicants: 3,632
Number of Available Apartments: 224
Lowest Eligible Lottery Number: 1
Highest Eligible Lottery Number: 390

what about the 3-bedroom apartments? I know the highest eligible lottery number for the 2-bedroom apartment was 677, and there were only 41 apartments available.

ncheer I am curious about that as well. I wish housing would post cutoffs. They seem to think that it’s none of your business if you didn’t apply for that particular selection. Everyone should have an idea of what cutoffs are like, even if they are not exactly the same from year to year.

Easton cutoff was posted by someone as 1179. A sophomore group with 874 did not get in, for reference.

People please request that housing post all cutoff numbers for students to see. Email your request to Joan Carbone: jcarbone@rci.rutgers.edu

Apparently 584 (sophomore in group) did not get Easton either.

I am curious to the other cutoffs as well.

I wish this whole livingston mess didn’t happen. If they didn’t re-open the application like they should’ve, none of this would’ve happened.

I am quite bitter that I will live in a dorm again, but with my 2000 number I think I can get Stonier. I’m out a kitchen, but at least I have a private bathroom

I can understand the lower number groups with a sophomore not getting into Easton because there is seniority

It wasn’t a fair move at all. You never know, people may have applied just because, but won’t actually pick Easton. There could be a second round. I hate how unpredictable they made the housing this year.

Housing sucks, and then there are the people who are living off campus with good numbers, even if they do a second round, there are approximately 1300 other lottery numbers ahead of mine.

When would a second round of choosing be?
