Lottery cutoffs for fall 2012

Ncheer I understand why the lower number sophomore group got picked; I was just mentioning it so people understand how seniority works. I do think that there should be seniority for the apartment selections, as there is for singles, Easton, and Rockoff.

I also wish that housing would provide cutoffs for all selection processes. As drexeler said above, the unpredictable factor is what makes housing apps so stressful. I have written to housing about this very thing and they don’t seem to get it. They keep saying, ‘the cutoffs change from year to year’.

Yeah, we know that, but you can make the whole process more transparent. Post cutoffs of all selection processes, for everyone to see. Tell people how many units are available for each process, and how many of those rooms are designated for ‘special groups’. List the order of selection in the same manner (or close to it) every year. Don’t allow roommate swapping without specific reasons (cuts down on lottery number manipulation).

If you have a specific complaint, email it to Joan Carbone at jcarbone@rci.rutgers.edu

She led many discussion groups in the fall to find out ‘what students want’. She said, "“We need to know first what students want and decide if what one group requests negatively impacts another group of students,” she said. “We want a process that is fair for all students.”

She also said, "Any changes will be widely advertised and communicated to students,” and "Our goal is to find a housing selection process that is clear, uncomplicated and meets the need of the most students possible,” she said.

There are other Targum articles about housing that address SEBS priority and other issues. Do a search on the Targum page.

They seem to be deleting posts on the Rutgers Housing Facebook website when people post a complaint. They say they want to know what the students are thinking, but I’m not sure about that…

NCheer if you go to Facebook, there is a ‘rutgers housing assignements’ page where people have been posting for roommates. It looks to me as if apartment apps are still open. Maybe they are continuing until all apartments are gone?

I really wish housing assignments would clarify this. They seemed to have stopped answering posts on the Facebook page.

Take a look there-maybe you can find a roommate for an apartment with a better number than what you have.

My son got a horrible number and ended up breaking off from his current roommates to join another group (he did not want to go off campus). It was very stressful as people would email him and then change their minds. It happened several times, but he finally found a group with a good number.

@ rualum - I understand that, sometimes this lottery system is so confusing, I doubt the office doesn’t understand it t some points. I’ve been looking religiously at the facebook page looking at what students have said. I could’ve applied for another apartment, but the thing is I really need to live on college ave because that’s where most of my classes are likely to be, so I’ll live in a double another year. At least it is somewhere to be.

I’m sorry about your son rualum, but I’m sure he’ll be living somewhere, but i agree that this process is so stressful and could be and SHOULD be a lot easier for everyone.

Something interesting, I thought that for the Easton Ave apartments, if you applied as a group of two, there would be a higher cutoff like in Livingston, but that number was also 1179. peculiar

editing 10char

Ok I am going to try that again.

For Easton, the doubles are slotted into 4 person apartments. You cannot choose another room # if a double opening is available. So the rooms fill in number order.

In Livingston, there were specific 2 person rooms available. So people who applied as a double, I am guessing, could either be put into a 4 person room or specifically request a doubles only room. Because more 4 person groups applied, their top number will be lower because they cannot go into the doubles-only rooms. So, the doubles rooms continued to fill after the four person apartments were gone, resulting in a higher number.

That process was really not made clear. Housing was telling people to apply for doubles, triples, or quads in Livi. So if you got in as a double, and also applied as a triple, if you selected a double, the roommate who applied with you as a triple got knocked out.

The whole thing is very confusing, even if you are making an effort to understand it.

Now I understand. My friend and I figured that if we applied to Easton ave just the two of us we would’ve had a better chance, but even still they messed up big time this year.

Also they will be posting the cutoff numbers on the facebook page as the lottery process goes on.

The lottery cutoff for the Busch Apartments was at 1431.

This is similar to last year, when the Busch apartments ran out at ~1500.

Number of students who applied: 2975
Number of Available Apartments: 280
Lowest Eligible Lottery Number: 233
Highest Eligible Lottery Number: 1431

We do expect to have apartments leftover towards the end of the selection process. If this happens, more groups may become eligible. Please look for an email during the apartment selection time in case this does happen and your group becomes eligible. (I’m pretty sure they say that about all selections).

btw the first email my son got, they said his group was ineligible for housing based on number. I wasn’t even surprised. That is how chaotic this process is.

My roommates and I are desperately trying to get an apartment. I’ll probably commute from home (45 mins away) or look off campus if I can’t get an apartment because I hate dorms with an incredible, undying passion. My roommate’s number is around 2,800. Do you think we have a shot at Rockoff? There’s also still apparently an open application for somewhere on Cook/Doug.

I don’t. :(

Well, last year the cutoff for apartments was supposedly ~3000. The only thing left was Newell/Starkey. It could be the same this year because they added Livi. I would definitely try for Newell if you want an apartment. I think Rockoff is after Newell. If you don’t try for Newell and wait for Rockoff, you may not get Rockoff either.

Otherwise try to get a spot off campus. There always seem to be people looking for extra roommates.

We only submitted apps to Easton, Rockoff, and the Busch apartments. Is Newell going to open up after, or was it open this past weekend? None of my roommates wanted to live on Cook/Douglass. We still don’t but I’m seriously NOT LIVING IN A DORM.

How are the suites on Busch? Is it possible to get them with a number around 3000?

jesszarr-I wouldn’t like a dorm either; I never lived in one because I transferred into Rutgers and they put me in Nichols. My son is on C/D and he has all classes on Livi. It’s a pain. Newells are also on the smaller side. If you don’t get Rockoff you could try for the suites.

Commuting is doable if you try to schedule your classes together and have them on fewer days. Try it for one semester and you can get on the housing waitlist if it doesn’t work out.

jpstevens last year suites cutoff was ~750 but that selection was before apartments so hard to know what it will be this year.

As per the housing assignments office, the highest lottery number last year for the suites selection was 1315. It may be higher this year because apartment selection was held first this year. hth

last year suites cutoff was somewhere around 1300-1400, and busch apartments was slightly higher than that (around 1700). however, suites were chosen before apts last year, whereas this year apts are chosen before suites. since the apts cutoff this year is considerably lower than last year, (1431 compared to last year’s 1700), i would assume suites cutoff would be higher this year than last year’s number of 13- or 14-something, probably hovering around 1700-1800 (as a higher bound).

For the record: Selection order for 2012 was February 1, Lottery # notification. The highest number I heard of was ~12,000.

Then, order of selection was SEBS priority, Douglass Residential College Henderson Apts, Douglass Residential College singles and doubles, Singles, Livingston Group Signup ends, Livingston Apts, Easton Ave Apts, Busch Apts, Cook Apts, Rockoff Apts, Suites, doubles.

This year, Livingston Apts were new, and Silvers (Busch) Apts were scheduled to all be renovated by Fall 2012.

Does anyone have the cutoffs from DRC, Singles, Newell/Starkey or Rockoff?

Please post them here for future reference!

Rutgers roommate gateway site: Housing has been recommending this site as a way to find roommates. My son actually did mail a few people, and received a few replies, but he found his eventual group by watching FB posts.

The gateway site is decent but it is very slow to refresh so looking at each profile takes some time. It will sort roommates based on the preferences you put in. It’s not the best, but a decent option for desperate lottery times.

There is a main page but I couldn’t figure out how to sign up on it; hence the error page link.

Something about the dorms that I heard recently: They are taking down the quad on College Ave which is Pell, Wessels, Hegeman and Leupp hall. These buildings are not up to code, and are unfortunately being taken down. That eliminates a decent amount of really big rooms, so college ave has even more competition for doubles. That sucks

^ Wow, and not even an announcement from Rutgers housing?

If they aren’t up to code, I wonder why and also what will replace them.

Its not confirmed, but its a rumor that my friend’s RA confirmed, so I’m sure they’ll make an announcement eventually, but they will probably will replace them with new housing. It’s a shame because that quad makes me smile when it’s springtime. It’s quite lovely
